Nothing is permanent. The wise know that all things will be completely destroyed. So it is said. Youth is impermanent, it takes no effort for a young person to become old, just as a flower is taken away by frost. It is said in the scriptures: Youth is impermanent, the body is not eternal, being without illness is impermanent, and wealth is not eternal. So it is said. Wealth is impermanent, and there are countless instances of rich people suddenly becoming hungry. Even if one has piles of wealth through profit and trade, it is unimaginable that enemies could seize it and turn one into a beggar with empty hands. Master Shantideva said: Having obtained much wealth, and enjoyed happiness for a long time, yet like being robbed by thieves, one goes away naked with empty hands. So it is said. Furthermore, even if one enjoys things like A-chang, wealth will be controlled by others. The honey that bees diligently gather appears to be enjoyed by others. So it is said. Friends are also impermanent, and Master Shantideva also said: Even the flesh and bones born together will separate and go their separate ways, what need to mention other friends? What need to mention those who are not friendly? So it is said. The Dharma Lord said: Like a child watching a rainbow, the companionship of friends is like that. So it is said. Therefore, nothing will not disappear. Master Shantideva said: Even while lying in bed, surrounded by many relatives and friends, one experiences the feeling of dying alone. What use are relatives? What use are friends? At that time, the only refuge is merit, but I have not relied on it. So it is said. At that time, nothing else will follow except the karma that one has accumulated. Master Aryadeva said: When death approaches and the king is about to depart, enjoyment, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever the king goes, karma will follow like a shadow. So it is said. Accumulating merit will bring enjoyment, Master Shantideva said: Giving away all possessions, abandoning all that is mine, when one must go alone to another place, those directed towards virtuous deeds will come before you. So it is said. The realization of merit.

In the Sutra of Discourse, it is said: By accumulating merit, happiness is attained. Therefore, people should accumulate merit. It should be accumulated again and again, and it should be done with perseverance. Thus it is said. In this way, in order for Dharma to become Dharma, by meditating on death and impermanence, one must develop a renunciation of this life. This renunciation of this life is named the Stages of the Path for a Person of Small Capacity. If you cherish these, then lie at the foot of the bed, drink a sip of water from the leftovers of food. Relatives and in-laws surround you, and when breathing becomes labored, there is nothing other than refuge and protector Dharma, please keep that in mind. In this way, even if Dharma becomes Dharma, one must go on the path of Dharma. Even if one renounces this life, if one strives for the happiness and fruits of samsara, such as the status of gods and humans in the next life, then one has not gone on the path of Dharma. Therefore, one should know that the nature of all samsara is suffering. The teacher Aryadeva said: Gods, humans, and the three realms of suffering, and these wheels of the five realms of beings, like playful gods, are impermanent and unstable, which wise person would trust in them? This is the great nature of suffering. Thus it is said. The teacher Vasubandhu said: There is no happiness for those in samsara, there is no coolness in fire, there is no fragrance in impurity. Thus it is said. There are six realms of beings, four places of birth, five paths, these beings revolve in samsara unwillingly, and there is nothing but suffering. Hell has the suffering of heat and cold, hungry ghosts have the suffering of hunger and thirst, animals have the suffering of ignorance and exploitation, humans have the suffering of busyness and poverty, asuras have the suffering of fighting, gods have the suffering of death and falling, and so on. Each of the six realms of beings has immeasurable suffering. Among them, there are eight hot hells, eight cold hells, and two solitary and neighboring hells, totaling eighteen. The feeling of suffering is intense and prolonged, unbearable, and just hearing the sound can cause one to vomit hot blood from the mouth and die, which is inconceivable. The teacher Aryadeva said: Here, in one day, being struck violently by three hundred short spears, the suffering is unbearable, compared to the small suffering of hell, even the rain cannot endure.
