Thinking that great praise will come, and doing those things for that purpose, being happy when praised, this is one of the eight worldly dharmas. Thinking that if I don't give alms, etc., I will be slandered, and doing alms, etc., in order not to be slandered, and being unhappy when slandered, this is one of the eight worldly dharmas. Like this, among the eight worldly dharmas, being happy when gaining, being happy when famous, being happy when comfortable, and being happy when praised, these four are gathered by attachment. Being unhappy when not gaining, being unhappy when not famous, being unhappy when not comfortable, and being unhappy when slandered, these four are gathered by hatred. Ignorance naturally pervades. The eight worldly dharmas, if summarized, do not go beyond the three: attachment, hatred, and ignorance. Any action taken completely by the eight worldly dharmas is solely an action of non-virtue. As the teacher Nagarjuna said: With attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the actions produced by them are non-virtuous. Without attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the actions produced by them are virtuous. Also, as the teacher Aryadeva said in the "Letter to a Friend": O worldly wise one, gain and no gain, fame and no fame, comfort and discomfort, praise and blame, these eight worldly dharmas, do not let them be the object of your mind, please be equanimous. Thus, whether dharma becomes dharma depends on one's own thoughts. If the root is medicine, then the trunk, branches, leaves, and fruits are all medicine. If the root is poison, then the trunk, branches, leaves, and fruits are all poison. Any action done by the body, speech, and mind, completely taken by the mind of enlightenment, is virtuous. The reason for this is that the mind of enlightenment is virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end. The Bhagavan also said: Virtuous in the beginning, middle, and end, the Buddhas of the past have spoken, the Buddhas of the future will also speak, and the perfectly enlightened Buddhas who appear now also repeatedly say. Like this, dharma does not become dharma because it is only through the eight worldly dharmas that one pursues only this life. Therefore, to counteract it, one should contemplate death and impermanence. Moreover, we will not stay in this world for long, we must die.

O! Death is certain, inevitable, swift, and unyielding. Time does not wait, and the senses do not cease. There is no assurance of not dying today, no certainty of not dying tomorrow. As Shantideva said: 'Who knows when tomorrow will bring death? One should practice diligently today. The great army of the Lord of Death is not a friend; we should not be intimate with it.' So it is said. Food and clothing are the means of survival, yet there are countless instances of people dying from overeating, indigestion, or food poisoning. There are also countless instances of people dying from being smothered by clothing. There are also countless instances of people dying from the toil of acquiring food and clothing, or dying on trade routes. This body can die even from a wound the size of a needle's eye, or from the rupture of a blood vessel as thick as a horse's tail. There is nothing that cannot become a cause of death. Therefore, no one has the assurance of staying in this world for long. As Nagarjuna said: 'This life, fraught with dangers, is like a flame in the wind, even more impermanent than a bubble on water. What a wonder it is to have the leisure to awaken from the sleep of breathing in and breathing out!' So it is said. Death is without certainty. As Aryadeva said: 'Some are old, some are young, some are in their prime, some die immediately after birth, and some are even seen to die in the womb. Since they will all die in turn, who has the assurance of being alive?' So it is said. Furthermore, in the Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish, it is said: 'What is born will die, what gathers will disperse, what accumulates will be exhausted, what rises will fall.' These are the four natural laws. At the time of death, all possessions, relatives, friends, wealth, youth, enemies, and everything else must be left behind. Even one's own body cannot be endured. The inability to endure heat, cold, and hunger must also be left behind. Even when there is no tomorrow, with no time to spare, the corpse is still weighed down by possessions, and it is cremated before it even leaves the house. No one has ever seen anyone live forever, so one should understand the truth of death and impermanence. Even if one lives happily for a moment in this life, this life is impermanent, like water cascading down a steep cliff. In the Garland of Great Assemblies, it is said: 'Friends, this life passes swiftly, like a torrent rushing down a steep cliff. Ignorant children do not understand this, and they are intoxicated by the pride of foolish desires.' So it is said. All compounded things are by nature mutable.
