Thus, clinging to self accumulates karma. Karma causes suffering in the higher and lower realms of samsara. The Hundred Karmas Sutra states, "Karmas are also various, and by them beings are made various." The Abhidharmakosha states, "The world is various, born from karma." Therefore, although there are many classifications of karma taught in the Buddha's scriptures and treatises, in brief, it should be understood as two types: virtuous and non-virtuous. Among these, non-virtuous karma leads to the lower realms and suffering. The noble teacher said, "Karma produced by attachment, hatred, and ignorance is non-virtuous. Likewise, all the lower realms are." The teacher Shantideva said, "Suffering arises from non-virtue. How can one be liberated from this? Day and night, I should contemplate only this." Virtuous karma leads to the happiness of the higher realms. The noble teacher said, "Karma produced without attachment, hatred, and ignorance is virtuous. Virtuous karma brings all the happy realms, and happiness in all lifetimes. One experiences the happiness of Brahma and others in the immeasurable and formless realms of meditation." The Four Hundred Verses states, "By ethics, one goes to the happy realms; by view, one obtains the supreme state." The scripture states, "Beings all desire manifest happiness; the happiness of beings is not without enjoyment. Knowing that enjoyment arises from generosity, the Buddha first spoke of generosity." In short, whether it is virtuous or non-virtuous karma, it should be known as the same kind of delusion. Therefore, even the cultivation of conventional bodhicitta itself is produced by compounded things and causes and conditions. The dharma that arises from it, being pervaded by impermanence, is also a delusion. The great Brahmin Saraha said, "However, even if one only cultivates compassion, remaining in samsara, one will not attain liberation." The mind that is not perfect, nor perfectly stable, or even the perfect one, will also dry up. The teacher Dharmakirti said, "Since love and so forth are not contrary to delusion, they do not completely eradicate faults. Since the view of emptiness is contrary to this, one should cultivate emptiness. Emptiness

Liberation comes through realization. The remaining meditation is its meaning. Thus it is said. When one realizes that this delusion is spontaneously accomplished and uncreated from the very beginning, and is unborn, it arises as coemergent wisdom without acceptance or rejection. As the noble teacher said: "Samsara and nirvana are not two; knowing the very nature of samsara is called nirvana." Thus it is said. In the Sutra of Noble Wisdom of Passing Away, it is said: "If the mind is realized, it is wisdom, therefore one should diligently cultivate the understanding of not seeking the Buddha elsewhere." Thus it is said. So, upon whom does the realization of this depend? It is only through devotion and reverence to a qualified guru that realization can occur. Other than that, it is not an object of verbal expression or mental speculation. Even a pandit who is learned in the five sciences cannot realize it. For example, although Kungawo (Ananda) was accomplished in the three pitakas, he was liberated by a great meditator, the noble Odzung (Kashyapa). And when the great Brahmin Saraha showed the pith instructions of deciding the mind to the noble teacher Nagarjuna in front of the stupa, he was liberated in one night. And although the wisdom of the great teacher Naropa Pandit was such that even the wisdom of the entire Jambudvipa could not match even one-sixteenth of it, he pleased a great meditator Tilopa with twelve hardships and attained the siddhi of Mahamudra. Therefore, all the learned great pandits attained liberation by going to the yogis, the experienced and realized practitioners, and showing them devotion and reverence. Therefore, in order for the realization of such coemergent wisdom to arise, the external condition is to serve a noble guru with devotion and reverence, and the internal condition is to accumulate merit. Other than that, it cannot be realized by other means. As it is said in the Hevajra Tantra: "Not spoken by others, coemergent (Tibetan: ལྷན་ཅིག་སྐྱེས།, Sanskrit Devanagari: सहज, Sanskrit Romanization: sahaja, Chinese literal meaning: coemergent). Not found anywhere, rely on the end of the guru, know from one's own merit." Thus it is said. And as it is said in the Mother Sutra Collection: "As long as all the roots of virtue are not perfected, one will not attain the supreme emptiness." Thus it is said. So, the guru to whom one should show devotion and reverence should also be a guru who possesses the qualities.
