Although there are many stages, the practice of Tummo is said to be essential because it is the basis for generating qualities. The meaning of Tummo is that all of samsara, the ocean of suffering, karma, afflictions, and conceptual thoughts, are obscured, hence it is called Tummo. It is divided into three types: channel Tummo, wind Tummo, and bindu Tummo. First, channel Tummo is: In general, this Vajra body has seventy-two thousand channels extending from the Brahma aperture at the crown of the head to the soles of the feet. These are condensed into sixty-four channels, and then thirty-two channels. Further condensed, they are the essence of the three channels and four chakras. That is, the junction where the three channels—Roma, Kyangma, and Kundalini—converge, exists in the form of a channel letter, and this is channel Tummo. Wind Tummo is: Generally, in a healthy and undamaged body, there are twenty-one thousand six hundred breaths in a day and night. These are condensed into sixty-four and thirty-two. That is, from the five root winds: downward-clearing, upward-moving, life-sustaining, fire-equalizing, and pervasive. And from the branch winds, the five that constantly move, definitely move, completely move, intensely move, and supremely move. Although it is believed that they have different locations, they exist as a single essence of wind at the junction where the three channels converge, and this is wind Tummo. Bindu Tummo is: At the junction of the three channels, by meditating on any object of focus such as the Tummo Sumtri, the fire of wisdom blazes, and the Bodhicitta descends from the Hum (Tibetan: ཧཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हं, Sanskrit Romanization: haṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Hum) at the crown of the head, and everything dissolves there, resulting in the Samadhi of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality. As Hevajra says: "By kindling Tummo in the navel, burning the five Tathagatas, also burning the eyes and so on, the one holding the rabbit burns, Hum (Tibetan: ཧཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: हं, Sanskrit Romanization: haṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Hum) drips." Therefore, in this Vajra body, the hosts of heroes and dakinis residing in the twenty-four external places reside. This body itself is naturally formed as the wheel of the mandala from the beginning. By offering the Samadhi of bliss and emptiness, the two accumulations are perfected. It is said that apart from that, no other offering can be established separately. With this in mind, Lord Gampopa also said: Conditioned phenomena

It is said that in the root of virtue, there is no greater merit than meditating on Tummo. Such interdependence is that generally, where the channels pervade the body, the winds pervade; where the winds pervade, the bindus pervade; where the bindus pervade, that bliss pervades. As it is said in the Hevajra, "Bliss is white bliss, bliss is red bliss, bliss pervades what can be produced and what cannot be produced." Therefore, the place where bliss arises is the confluence itself. For example, just as sheep and goats graze on the mountain, and the shepherd gathers them into a pen, and the pen is also the dwelling place of the sheep and goats, so too is the dwelling place of the bindus. As it is said in the Hevajra, "It dwells in the center of the navel chakra." Thus, in that place, the three—channels, winds, and bindus—exist without distinction, and that is called Yogini, and it is also called Great Mother. Again, as it is said in the Hevajra, "That is the Bhagavan Wisdom Mother, together with her the Great Seal, if meditated upon, one obtains the bliss-bestowing siddhi." It is said that by meditating on these three types of Tummo, the essence and impurities of the nine constituents separate, and the essence pervades the body, thereby generating realization, and the impurities are expelled from the nine orifices. Regarding this, if the body's illusory wheel, the mind's focus, and the wind's instructions are not complete, merit will not arise. Therefore, by doing some methods of illusory wheel, meditate on whichever of the three focuses is clear, and then exhale three times. After that, inhale a thread-like amount of air, without closing the lips. If pressed on the throat, it will cause difficulty in swallowing; if pressed on the heart, it will cause heart wind; if pressed on the stomach, it will turn into a tumor. Therefore, if pressed on that place, it will rotate outward, like blowing a bellows. It is said that at that time, fire will rise up in the throat; if it is too strong, release it. When exhaling, if exhaled from the mouth with sound, blood and serum will clog the throat and turn into disease, so exhale slowly from the nostrils. It is said that immediately after exhaling, do not inhale, but do three or so rotations in the meantime. It is said that after meditating for a long time in this way, to release it, straighten the central channel in the lotus position, cross the fists in the lap, and meditate as above, and when the wind cannot be controlled, by doing the illusory wheel, the wind will become longer and longer, lasting three days, four days, seven days, and so on.
