It is said to be similar to practicing Tara. However, for beginners, since the face and hands of the yidam deity are not clear, one observes the form of the deity through the continuity of prior and subsequent knowledge. From the perspective of needing to meditate, one can engage in the activity of thoroughly examining the form. However, Rinpoche said, "The term 'thorough examination' is not applicable to mantras." The second is dependent on others, which has two aspects. Pure dependence on others is the cause and effect controlled by bodhicitta, while impure dependence on others is the cause and effect controlled by afflictions. The third is perfect reality, which has two aspects. The unchanging perfect reality is that all aggregates, elements, and sense bases are inherently the self-nature of the deity's body from the very beginning. As it is said, "All Buddhas of the three times, heroes, dakinis, and Vajradhara himself." Or, in the Guhyasamaja, it is said, "In short, the five aggregates are renowned as the five Buddhas." Or, in the Chakrasamvara, it is also said, "The aggregate of form is Vairochana." And so on. In the Hevajra, it is also said, "The color residing in generosity exists merely by birth." And "Sentient beings are themselves Buddhas." And so on. The non-inverted perfect reality is that the deity itself is the five enlightenments, or the three rituals, or the instantaneous recollection and completion, etc., meditated upon according to the way it is. That which becomes manifest is what is referred to as gaining stability in the deity. On this, the noble teacher said, "Initially, through the union of karma, the eighth ground will be attained." Some people are surprised by this. They say it is dualistic. Taking the way of understanding of others, they criticize by focusing on the shortcomings, thinking that merely clarifying the face and hands of the generation stage and meditating on it as atta will not lead to the attainment of the eighth ground. If they hope to attain the eighth ground in this way, they will definitely not attain it. This arises from the cause of bodhicitta, and in the play of thorough examination, gaining stability in the deity empty of elaboration is the actual Buddha himself. There is nothing to be surprised about. Thus, arising from bodhicitta, completely empty of the play of thorough examination, the Buddha who has abandoned the three obscurations, being inseparable and one with it, therefore, the eighth ground is attained.

Tsa chi che! Thus it is said. Furthermore, the third is that the deity must be very clear in appearance. To make it arise, it is necessary to have complete causes and conditions. The cause is that all the marks and signs of the Buddha are said to arise from secret dependent origination. Thus, in the Hevajra it says: "The Teacher's thirty-two marks, the chief one endowed with eighty minor marks, is called semen residing within." And again in the same text it says: "Camphor itself is the selfless mother, actions and so forth are spoken of." As for conditions, of the two, the favorable condition requires relying on food and so forth that increase the elements. Thus, in the Hevajra it says: "Therefore, camphor is the cause, meat and rice are the food that is born." Thus it is said. The unfavorable conditions are to abandon all unfavorable things such as rottenness and moss, and violent behaviors that destroy the body. By protecting the growth so that it does not diminish, the benefit of this is that the deity's body color, hand gestures, ornaments, and attire, even the way the hairs curl, will appear clearly. Therefore, one should cherish this greatly. Furthermore, the fourth is pure mindfulness, of which there are two. From the relative point of view, the purity of each deity is that, as mentioned above, all the aggregates, elements, and sense bases are visualized as the deity, and the purity is the abandonment of grasping at ordinariness. Attachment to the deity is like a golden chain, it binds. In order to abandon attachment to grasping at the deity, from the ultimate point of view, purity is meditating on the deity of the generation stage and the great seal of the completion stage as being inseparable. This is called union. Where does the union take place? The deity is emptiness, and emptiness is the deity. The two are inseparable and have existed from the beginning. This is called the illusory deity body. It is called the purity of ultimate reality. In general, abiding in the union of the generation stage is the nature. It is inherent, not like suddenly becoming enlightened by uniting the two into one. To symbolize this, the deity appears as father and mother. Therefore, the consort Vajrayogini of glorious Heruka is not taken as a bride from elsewhere, nor is she united. The father and mother are the nature of great bliss, the union inseparable from the beginning. The father is the aspect of generation, method; the mother is the aspect of emptiness, wisdom. These two are non-dual.
