These are the teachings that need to be learned: After taking refuge in the Buddha Jewel, do not prostrate to other deities; after taking refuge in the Dharma Jewel, abandon harming sentient beings; after taking refuge in the Sangha Jewel, do not rely on non-Buddhist friends; respect the Three Jewels, and abandon disrespect. These six are the six individual teachings. Now, there are five common teachings: Do not abandon the Three Jewels for the sake of life or reward; even for important matters, do not seek other methods; one should learn to make offerings at all times; wherever one goes, take refuge in the deities of that place; and one should learn to increase and practice taking refuge. In short, after taking refuge in the Three Jewels, one needs to have a firm conviction that 'what you know, I also know.' If one has such a firm conviction from the depths of one's heart, then all unfavorable factors, obstacles, illnesses, and harms, etc., will be eliminated by this alone. These are only mentioned briefly. In the past, there was a virtuous friend named Khampa Lungpa, who became seriously ill. The disciples said, 'Now is the time for the master to go into retreat.' He said, 'Even if I die, I will die taking refuge; even if I get better, I will get better by taking refuge.' So he only practiced taking refuge, and he recovered. There was also a virtuous friend named Yerpa Zhangtsun, who also became ill, and the disciples advised the master to go into retreat as before. He said, 'Even if I get better, I will get better by taking refuge in the Three Jewels; even if I die, I will die by taking refuge.' So he only practiced taking refuge. After a while, he cried out in pain, 'I, named Yerpa Zhangtsun, will die taking refuge in the Buddha!' It is said that a huge, long creature emerged from the top of his head. That creature also said, 'I, named Zurphut Gyuntal, will also die taking refuge in the Buddha!' After that, without any effort, he recovered naturally. There was also a virtuous friend named Je, who was also a virtuous friend.

The mother and son were very skilled at divination, so they went before him and asked him to examine them. He said that they needed to retreat. Because they did not have the resources for retreat, they went to Lhasa and circumambulated the Jowo statue while taking refuge. After half a month, they went before the virtuous friend again and asked him to examine them again. He said, "What have you done in the meantime? Now you don't need to retreat." Therefore, it is very important to have firm faith in the Three Jewels of Refuge. If you have such faith from the bottom of your heart, then even when meditating on other protective wheels, like fire cannot defeat the fire god, and a net of arrows cannot defeat spirits, etc., as it is said, if you have the above faith, you can defeat them. Because all arrows and fire will become the fire of wisdom. Such a special refuge and the difference between the common refuge, those that have been reported above are very important. In general, the reason why it is called common refuge is because the intention of the Three Jewels of Refuge is the same. The meaning of special refuge is that it is made special by the thought of wanting oneself and others to attain perfect enlightenment, so it is called special refuge. He said that from taking special refuge, one can generate bodhicitta. Now, by training the mind in the four immeasurables, one generates bodhicitta. Think that all sentient beings as infinite as the sky are your mothers. That is loving-kindness. Think that these mothers are wandering in the great ocean of suffering in the three realms of samsara, how pitiful, that is compassion. Think that these pitiful mothers would be happy if they had happiness, and would be happy if they were free from suffering, that is joy. Treat all sentient beings who have become mothers as infinite as the sky equally, without near or far, that is equanimity. Now, fundamentally, it is to generate the thought of the guru as a truly perfect and fully enlightened Buddha, from which one can generate bodhicitta. As Jowo Rinpoche said: If you generate the thought of the guru as an ordinary person, you will never generate bodhicitta. If you generate the thought of a bodhisattva, you will hesitate whether it will arise or not, so it will not arise.
