Similarly, by eliminating the extreme of non-existence by negating what is grasped, and by preventing the grasper and the grasped, they consider the view of Madhyamaka to be correct. Acarya Śāntarakṣita and other great paṇḍitas also considered this to be a correct Madhyamaka treatise. In the *Entering the Three Bodies*, it also says: 'The so-called Madhyamaka path, if it is only Mind-Only, is not reasonable in any way when analyzed with reason. Those who desire perfect enlightenment, in order to generate non-conceptual wisdom, therefore, should always practice Mind-Only.' In the *Treatise on the Three Natures*, it also says: 'When the two graspers do not exist, one will focus on the *dharmadhātu*.' If all consciousnesses are deluded and all objects are false, then what is the difference between this and the Madhyamikas who claim that everything is non-existent? Although they consider what is refuted by reason, such as the separation of one and many, to be false, they do not consider things, appearances, abilities, and dependent arising, etc., to be without self-nature in conventional truth. Because they consider all *paratantra* to have self-nature in conventional truth, the difference is great. Therefore, they explained this passage from the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*: 'For those who are good at observing reason, the grasper and the grasped will cease.' Second, explaining the meaning of 'One should focus on suchness and practice Mind-Only' from the same sutra. First, refuting the views of others, that is, the argument stated by the Madhyamikas who claim that everything is non-existent: Whatever is separated from one and many is without self-nature, such as a rabbit's horn. For blue and yellow, etc., they are also without self-nature because they are separated from one and many. To this, someone retorted: If all knowledge is an appearance of non-existence, that is, if all knowable things are non-existent and all knowledge is a delusion of appearing as non-existent, then, since the two valid cognitions (two valid cognitions: direct perception and inference) do not exist, other non-erroneous knowledge, such as decisive knowledge and memory, etc., also do not exist, so there are no causes for the knower and no arguments. Even if the argument is not established in itself, it is unreasonable to argue because it is known to others, because this is the view of the Sāṃkhya school. And all internal and external tenets will be established by valid cognition, because for arguments of living beings and aggregates, etc., the self, etc., are known as arguments on their respective theses. Therefore, 'Being completely established in both is itself a refutation.' This sentence shows that the refutation also shows that one does not understand these two. In the *Self-Commentary*, it says: 'We do not have unlimited arguments and refutations.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If someone asks, 'Does it do that?' then to speak of arguments without valid cognition is simply a joke. We establish and refute with valid cognition, and valid cognition cannot be harmed even by a hundred valid cognitions. What need is there to speak based merely on the desires of others who lack valid cognition?' Thus it is said. Furthermore, if the capacity for all things is negated, then neither negation nor affirmation has the capacity to do that. Both of these, being unestablished in themselves, will become unestablished. Moreover, in that case, one is not even teaching the Dharma, because if everything is nonexistent, then Prajñāpāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom) would not be without error, and the four Āryas (Noble Ones) produced by it would not exist. Because there is no other-power (gzhan dbang, other-dependent nature) and no pariniṣpanna (yongs grub, thoroughly established nature), the visions of the Āryas would also cease to exist. If one rejects inference, then one would abandon the proof of Sarvajña (Omniscient One) and the next world, and so forth. If cause and effect are prohibited, then the cause and effect of saṃsāra (cyclic existence) and nirvāṇa (liberation), and the four noble truths of the Āryas would not exist, therefore the Three Jewels would also not exist. These are the three fallacies of explanation listed in the commentary 'What is said is unreasonable.' Furthermore: 'Having burned all the dry firewood of knowable objects, quiescence is the Dharmakāya (chos sku, Dharma Body) of the Victors. At that time, there is no birth and no cessation, the cessation of mind is the manifestation of the Body.' Thus, when obscurations are exhausted, because the continuity of wisdom is interrupted, it is admitted that wisdom is obscured. There is no birth and cessation, and the cessation of mind, and manifesting from that cessation, and so forth, there are various contradictions. Āryadeva (圣天) explaining everything as illusion leads to the cutting off of other-power (gzhan dbang, other-dependent nature). Śāntarakṣita (寂护论师) considering everything as truly mind in conventional truth leads to the cutting off of parikalpita (kun btags, completely fabricated nature). The Mind Commentary says: 'Parikalpita (kun btags,遍计所执,completely fabricated nature) and paratantra (gzhan dbang,他性,other-dependent nature), and pariniṣpanna (yongs grub,圆成实性,thoroughly established nature) itself, the nature of emptiness is one, this mind is what is imputed to.' Thus, it is explained that these three are imputed to the mind. If all of these do not have the three essences as the state of knowable objects, then the way of not abandoning either extreme of existence or non-existence has already been explained. If knowing that all of this existing appearance is illusion, because it is nonexistent, there is no fault of saṃsāra (cyclic existence), this also explains the refutation of the Sarvāstivāda Furthermore, the Sarvāstivāda (一切有部) says that in order to prove this, whatever can be cognized is not false, like consciousness. Blue and so forth are also things that can be cognized, which is a 'pervasive contradictory opposition.' Saying this is also incorrect, because false things enter into the object of appearance and fabrication. Moreover, for false things, the reverse pervasion 'not being cognizable' is not established. Second, concerning self-nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
