exist, and those of the Pariniṣpanna (the complete realization of the nature of things) are not non-existent either, because they exist in the Paramārtha-satya (ultimate truth), but they are also not substantially existent, because they are ultimate.’ Thus it is said. For a detailed explanation of this, refer to the treatises of Maitreya. This, in the footnotes of the Twenty Thousand Verse Prajñā (Twenty Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra), where Maitreya universally inquired about the method of teaching the Yum (Mother, Prajñāpāramitā), was made into a scripture of the activity of abandoning perversion by Ārya-vimuktisena. Therefore, this teacher also considers the Trisvabhāva (Three Natures) to be Madhyamaka (the Middle Way). Ārya Asaṅga and his followers explained all the Mothers with this, as it is said in the summary of the Eight Thousand Verse Prajñā: ‘The Prajñāpāramitā, truly relies on the three teachings. In the Prajñāpāramitā, the Buddha did not teach anything else.’ That is what is said. These three natures are the meaning of the Prajñāpāramitā of the Buddhas of the past, present, and future, because it is the antidote to all perversions, therefore it destroys the perverted views of seeing existence and non-existence in various ways. The meaning of existence and non-existence explained in various ways in the sutras refers to the Prajñāpāramitā knowing the existence and non-existence of the Three Natures, thereby destroying all perverted cognitions of existence and non-existence. Therefore, in distinguishing the Nītārtha (requiring interpretation) and Neeyartha (explicit) of the Mother Prajñā Sūtra, the main measure of distinction is the scripture of Maitreya and what he inquired about. The other two measures are only minor parts that engage in the Nītārtha and Neeyartha, because the Dharma of the Āryas cannot be understood by these two measures. Therefore, whatever is spoken from the mouth of the Victorious One and established as the definitive meaning makes the mind firmly engage in the non-perverted meaning. This is what is being taught, that the Nītārtha and Neeyartha of all the Buddha's words are distinguished by the Buddha's words themselves. Even the Daśabhūmika (Ten-Bhumi) Bodhisattvas such as Maitreya could not understand and needed to inquire of the Buddha, hence the inquiries of Maitreya, and the statements of the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra (Explanation of the Thought Sutra) and the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra (Descent into Lanka Sutra) and so on. Therefore, one should adhere to the Nītārtha and Neeyartha distinguished by the Buddha himself. If one considers all knowable things to be false like the Parikalpita (completely fabricated), then one will fall into the abyss of perversion. If the meaning of the sutra needs to be guided by other measures, then Maitreya is the master of all three measures, therefore his teachings cannot be directed to other meanings. If everything is false like the Parikalpita, then even if there are scriptures, there is no measure, therefore it is Nītārtha. Because both worldly and transworldly measures will harm it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is for this reason. Thus it is taught. The sixth fundamental meaning is composed and taught for the sake of these treatises. The sixth fundamental meaning is composed and taught for the sake of these treatises: If someone says that all those Madhyamaka views mentioned earlier have already been explained by previous teachers, then this treatise is meaningless. In response, it is said: 'By way of valid cognition,' meaning that some schools, such as those who believe everything is false, reject valid cognition (pramana), and those Madhyamikas who do not accept the three natures (trisvabhava) are not skilled in the Buddha's path. Therefore, this treatise is composed so that those who are skilled in valid cognition and skilled in the Buddha's vehicle (i.e., the path) may rejoice in it. Such a concise treatise explains the implicit and explicit meanings of all sutras and tantras, and understands all correct and seemingly correct views. Such a treatise has not appeared in this teaching. Therefore, wise people with discernment should study it. From various inverted wrong views, various evil deeds of body, speech, and mind arise, and thus one wanders in the endless ocean of samsara. This is what the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas say in the treatises. Manjushri (文殊), prophesied by the Buddha, attained accomplishment and is renowned as the second omniscient one in the degenerate age. For those who desire higher realms and liberation, this treatise is worth consulting with the wise and studying. If it exists, it destroys the darkness of views clinging to permanence and opens the lotus of wisdom of the fortunate ones. This sun of the treatise, the source of jewels, has never been able to shine in these snow mountains before. The definitive meaning of all Buddhas of the three times, the Buddha's teachings, and Maitreya's (慈氏) good words explain the view of the Middle Way free from extremes. May I quickly attain omniscience (一切智) through this merit. The commentary on the Ornament of the Middle Way, called 'The Lamp Illuminating Words and Meanings,' written by the learned Bhikshu Bhagavanarakshita (薄伽梵戒), is completed. Auspicious! Auspicious! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
