By prohibiting everything, it becomes utterly non-existent, because all of samsara is prohibited. Some who claim to be Madhyamikas say that in appearance, existence is established through experience, thereby eliminating the extreme of nihilism; upon analysis, there is fear, thereby eliminating the extreme of eternalism. But this is not correct, because experience can only eliminate what has not been experienced, and cannot eliminate non-existence, because all that is conceptually imputed, in appearance, through experience, will also become existent. What is unbearable upon analysis becomes a reasoning that eliminates the extreme of existence. Furthermore, some who hold this view say that in conventional truth, everything exists, and in ultimate truth, everything does not exist, thereby eliminating both extremes. This is also incorrect, because if all that is conceptually imputed exists, then the views that hold these things would not be mistaken. If both other-powered and perfectly established natures do not exist, then ultimate truth would become a nihilistic view. Moreover, the faults are the same in saying that illusory-like appearances eliminate non-existence, and the lack of inherent existence eliminates existence. The disciple of Buddha Yeshes (buddha ye shes), Vimalamitra (dri med sbas pa), in the Ornament of the Guhyasamaja (gsang ba 'dus pa'i rgyan), says: 'If one thoroughly establishes that everything is non-existent, then it is not direct perception, nor inference, not a valid cognition, nor a non-valid cognition, and the connection is not well established.' And refuting that both the object of measurement and the measurer are non-entities, and so forth. Moreover, since you consider the wisdom of the noble ones to be conventional truth, the wisdom of the Buddhas would also become the nature of ignorance, a obscuration that obscures. 'If someone does not know what is empty of what, but sees it as empty of that, then that is a wrong view of it, and they will engage in non-virtue and destroy many, both themselves and others.' And so forth, detailed refutations can be seen there. Regarding the negation of cause and effect, the Sravaka schools say: 'Like this, denying cause and effect, wrong views will uproot the white side.' This will cut off the stream of virtue, and so forth, which are all in the Madhyamakalankara (dbu ma rgyan). Fearing these, Shantarakshita (zhi ba 'tsho) and Haribhadra (seng ge bzang po) and others acknowledge cause and effect and valid cognition and so forth. In general, within Buddhism, among the views of the eighteen schools and the Madhyamika teachers, there are not many that are the same, so it is impossible for all views to be in one place. One should carefully analyze and then refute those that are mistaken. The detailed views of all the philosophical schools are in the Ornament Flower of Philosophical Systems (grub mtha' rgyan gyi me tog). Part Four: Elaborate Explanation of the Svātantrika-Madhyamaka System Part Four: Elaborate Explanation of the Svātantrika-Madhyamaka System, which includes both those with valid cognition and those with scriptural authority. With Valid Cognition First, explaining those with valid cognition, which includes four topics. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*, it says: 'Relying only on the mind, do not examine external objects.' 1-1792 Explaining this, the sutra says: 'There is no real meaning, only the mind. Seeing external objects is inverted.' This means that the fabrication of clinging to meaningless things as meaningful is like clinging to meaning in awareness, such as the awareness of mistaking fish scales for silver, just as that illusion is fabricated as silver. Similarly, mistaking non-conceptual blue, etc., as real is also fabricating it as real by conceptual thought when non-conceptual appearances arise. Such false distinctions are established by false appearing consciousness, not by valid cognition that cognizes real meaning. Because for the Mind-Only school, there is no valid cognition that cognizes real meaning, because at that time there is no other-awareness. 'Self-awareness is considered the result.' Valid cognition negates the establishment of things, but the application of valid cognition to fabrication is a Tibetan tradition. For any false thing that is not established, adding the label of being established is precisely the nature of falsity. It shows the establishment that contradicts external objects, because external objects are immutable. As Nāgārjuna's *Commentary on the Mind* says: 'A woman's body, in the minds of some, is an ascetic, a lustful person, and a dog, respectively producing three thoughts of impurity, desire, and food.' 1-1793 Therefore, all three natures are not established as false, because the dependent nature is true in the relative, and the perfected nature is true in the ultimate. Therefore, the distinction of falsity lies in the sense faculties with defects, and the habitual patterns of illusion established by clinging to meaning. The appearance of duality that arises from these two is false. As the *Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra* says: 'Like a child's imagination, external objects are meaningless. The mind disturbed by habitual patterns appears as real.' Negating the assertion that the appearance of the two aspects of grasper and grasped is true in consciousness, that is, negating the truth-aspect Mind-Only. If it is said that falsity has five aspects. True awareness is consciousness. Conceptual thought is its object. One aspect is oneness. Therefore, it is difficult to connect even without conceptual thought. As in the *Pramāṇavārttika*: 'If the aspects of various objects cannot be one, then how does the one wisdom appear as many?' Because it is refuted by negating the contradiction of one and many. Furthermore, negating the aspect-possessing consciousness of the Sautrāntika school, that is, clinging is awareness. 1-1794 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4
