Similarly, the entity of a son (referring to phenomena) does not arise either, because it is contradictory in other ways. Furthermore, the initial arising, the intermediate abiding, and the final ceasing do not exist before arising, therefore there are no conditioned phenomena. If it is said that these three exist separately in their respective times, then because there are no two, each one cannot constitute a conditioned phenomenon, because a single part does not have the ability to constitute the whole. A pot is made up of pieces of tile, and without the tiles, the entity of the pot would not arise; and the tiles also depend on clay, and the clay depends on water and earth, etc., without end. Therefore, all causes and effects depend on other factors, and there is no self-nature that does not depend. Without dependence, there is no independence, therefore, it does not arise from either self or other, so there is no arising. Arising is not reasonable before or after the one who arises (like a pot), because the one who arises would fall into a state of non-arising. It is also impossible for the two to arise simultaneously, like the left and right horns, because they do not depend on each other, and the two could separate, thus falling into a state of non-arising. Finally, if because there is old, there is initially arising, then when it initially arises, the pot is new, so the initially arising does not become old; and after separating, all that arises does not become old, because the new is not completely born afterwards, just like the initial new arising. The initially arising will later perish, and later the new will arise, so it is not old; if before and after are the same, then new and old would become the same, so there is no old, therefore there is no arising that it represents. Therefore, the benefits of realizing that there is no birth and aging are: 'At that time, there is no great aging, no suffering and death.' And, 'Whoever always knows that birth is unborn, will transcend the Lord of Death.' The present thing does not arise from the present thing itself, because simultaneous things cannot be cause and effect. The present thing does not arise from the past and future either, because both are ceased and unborn non-entities. Therefore, it does not arise from the three times of past, present, and future, so its self-nature is unborn. 1-474 It is also impossible for the two to arise simultaneously, like the left and right horns, because they do not depend on each other, and the two could separate, thus falling into a state of non-arising. Finally, if because there is old, there is initially arising, then when it initially arises, the pot is new, so the initially arising does not become old; and after separating, all that arises does not become old, because the new is not completely born afterwards, just like the initial new arising. The present thing does not arise from the past and future either, because both are ceased and unborn non-entities. Therefore, it does not arise from the three times of past, present, and future, so its self-nature is unborn. 1-475 Therefore, birth does not come from anywhere, and cessation does not go anywhere; if this is the case, how can there be things like illusions? Although they appear, they have no self-nature, so they are like illusions, but they are not completely non-existent like a rabbit's horn, therefore, all the establishments of samsara and nirvana are reasonable, and liberation can also be achieved through this view. Negating the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, thereby negating the nature of conditioned phenomena. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
