《Lipe Rorje Teachings》RR8 'Ornament' of the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Praxis 1-342 The Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Praxis, 'Ornament' Chapter 1: Showing the Means of Abandoning the Grasping of Permanence The Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Praxis, called 'Ornament' In Sanskrit: Bodhisattvayogacaryacatuśatakaalaṃkaarapuṣpanaama In Tibetan: Byang chub sems dpa'i rnal 'byor spyod pa bzhi brgya pa'i rgyan gyi me tog ces bya ba I prostrate to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three times! All places of samsara and nirvana, acceptance and rejection, without exception. With the manifest wisdom that exhausts the two obscurations. Having realized them as they are, with compassion for beings. I pay homage to the Teacher, the Complete and Perfect Buddha. Born from a lotus in the land of Singha (Sri Lanka), Having received the prophecy of the Victorious One and attained the state of the noble. Lovingly giving even his own eyes, I will explain this treatise on the conduct of a Bodhisattva. The teacher Aryadeva was born as the prince of the king of Singha (Sri Lanka). He abandoned the throne and became ordained in that very place. He went to the glorious mountain in the south to the presence of the teacher Nagarjuna, became his attendant, and became learned in all the scriptures. This teacher is prophesied in the Root Tantra of Manjushri: 'Moreover, a supreme renunciate will dwell in the city of Sinhala. His name will be 'Not-Noble' but he will be noble. He will repel opposing adversaries and refute the mantras of the Tirthikas (non-Buddhists). At that time, a terrifying time will occur at the end of the age.' Here, there is no praise or declaration of intent, but the subject matter of this treatise is the places of acceptance and rejection for a Bodhisattva, and the purpose is to understand them. The attainment of Buddhahood through familiarizing oneself with that understanding is the purpose of the purpose, and that purpose and purpose arising from the treatise is the connection. The sixteen chapters of this work were divided by the teacher Palden Chokyong into the first eight chapters called 'Hundred on Dharma' and the latter eight chapters called 'Hundred on Debate', and he explained the view as Chittamatra (Mind-Only). This is what is said in the commentary. Therefore, the conventional view of this teacher is the false aspect of Chittamatra, because in works such as 'Destroying the Errors of Madhyamaka', he explains everything as illusory appearances. His ultimate view is in accordance with the teacher Nagarjuna. The teacher Dharmapala explains the first eight chapters with examples that are well-known in the world. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The explanation should refer to the commentary. This treatise elucidates the Bodhisattva's view, conduct, meditation, fruition, and qualities. Firstly, to demonstrate the method of abandoning the clinging to permanence, aversion arises from impermanence, thereby making it easy to understand suffering and so on. Then, in order to understand the phenomena of samsara and nirvana as they are explained in this text, therefore, the impermanence of death is elucidated. For any being, whether in the desire realm or the three realms, Whether in the underworld, on the earth, or in the heavenly realms, there is a master who slays them. The word 'possessing' should be used in conjunction with 'that,' because 'who' and 'that' are always related. Therefore, possessing the punishment of the king of death, yet having no executor of death, sleeping like a true noble one without guarding against it, what could be worse than that? Because countless faults of samsara arise from the clinging to the permanence of not dying.' These are embellished words. Alternatively, the first two lines can be explained as the qualities of the Buddha, And the latter three as the Buddha possessing those qualities, liberating beings from samsara, and using the word 'self,' which is a figure of speech with a double meaning. Here, from the Vinaya-vastu and the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha, etc., Yama, the lord of death, is described as killing beings and inflicting punishments according to karma. Its meaning is found in a letter from Acharya Chandra Gomi to his disciple: 'Thereafter, death is a delightful hand, / Grasping those who have no means of resistance. / The collection of white hair and teeth, / Seizes from the top like a vulture. / Bound tightly by Yama's noose, / Even if one cries and wails,/ He does not hear the cries of relatives, / Just as one's own cries echo in one's ears. / Between impassable rivers and towering rocks, / On dangerous paths entangled with sharp thorns, / The noose of time tightens around the neck, and Yama's messengers, / Fiercely drive and lead with clubs.' Furthermore, the Bodhicaryavatara states: 'Seized by the messengers of Yama...' From the Abhidharma of both the Lesser and Greater Vehicles, the three types of death are explained: death from the exhaustion of karma, death from the exhaustion of merit, and death from the exhaustion of lifespan. For the upper two realms (form realm and formless realm), there is no description of Yama's punishment, therefore, if the three realms are understood as the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm, then involuntary death itself is the meaning of the lord of death (Yama). For beings such as the nagas in the underworld, Yama is the lord of death himself. In Acharya Blo-gros Sna-tshogs's words on impermanence: 'Who can...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
