The detailed method of establishing emptiness is found in Śāntarakṣita's Madhyamakālaṃkāra. Another way to refute is that if the result exists in the cause, then the cause and result are the same; if it does not exist in it, then (omitted part) means that the cause and result are considered different, and these two views have been refuted. If both exist, then the Jainas believe that the soul (ātman) has always existed, and the body is newly born; gold has always existed, and ornaments are newly born, (omitted part) means that both exist, which is also refuted by combining the previous refutation of existence and non-existence. If the result neither exists nor does not exist in the cause, then it cannot be asserted that the result exists or does not exist in the cause, (omitted part) means that there is neither the two to be refuted, nor the non-two that refutes the two, which is also refuted by combining, which has actually been explained, so Candrakīrti explains. Other commentators explain it differently. In general, the detailed explanations of the views that things exist, do not exist, both exist, and neither exist, and the refutations of the views that are the same, different, both, and neither can be found in the commentary, but because it will be confusing, I will not write it. If all dharmas do not have self-nature, then what is the reason for those opponents to cling to permanence and truth? As the scripture says, 'How', due to the wrong perception of continuity, that is, not understanding the momentary change of continuity, the non-Buddhist hermits mistakenly regard the past and the future as one through the supernormal power of remembering past lives, thus considering continuity as permanent. Similarly, due to the wrong perception of aggregation, that is, not understanding that multiple things exist, they see and cling to multiple aggregations as one thing. The wise Madhyamikas do not cling to permanence and truth, etc., as things or non-things, but only observe the dependent arising of dharmas, and are liberated from permanence and annihilation by speaking of dependent arising itself. The phrase 'To whom' indicates the contradiction between dependent arising and self-nature, and shows that neither exists, these are all things. Although everyone knows that things are dependent arising from causes and conditions, they do not understand that it has no self-nature, just as children cling to images as real. Therefore, knowing or not knowing the self-nature of dependent arising is the difference between the Madhyamikas and other schools. For all things, if the result does not exist in the cause, then it is meaningless to gather for the sake of the result, and gathering for the sake of the result does not exist for the noble ones, so they do not gather, which shows that they have seen the self-nature of cause and effect. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They do not consider it to be true. Even children understand cause and effect, thus understanding dependent origination, but they do not understand that it is without inherent existence. The noble ones, once they understand dependent origination, understand that it is without inherent existence. Therefore, the seed or cause of the three realms is the consciousness that grasps things as true, and the self and what belongs to the self, which is without inherent existence, and cessation, which is a complete reversal. In the *Pramanavarttika* it says: 'Because the seed of the view of self is abandoned, there is no return.' And in the *Madhyamakavatara* it says: 'Due to grasping at truth, enemies such as attachment and hatred arise; if that is reversed, how could they arise?' Thus it is said. This explains the reversal of samsara, but it does not explain the cessation of the mind-stream, because the *Heart Sutra Commentary* says that even the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas will eventually become Buddhas. The explanation of the fourteenth chapter, refuting the extreme of permanence, is complete. The fifteenth chapter, refuting the meaning of conditioned phenomena. In explaining the refutation of the meaning of conditioned phenomena, the existence, non-existence, and arising of conditioned phenomena are refuted. For those who believe in arising from non-existence, if the cause does not have the ability to produce the effect, then anything could arise, like a rabbit's horn, because they are all non-existent. If non-existent things could arise, then there would be such a result, therefore non-existent things cannot arise, it is impossible. For those who, like the Samkhyas, believe in arising from existence, if the effect already exists in the cause from the beginning, then the effect will not arise, because it already exists. If something that already exists can still arise, then it will arise endlessly, therefore something that already exists does not arise. The arising of the effect and the destruction of the cause occur simultaneously, therefore the effect destroys the cause, so it will not arise from non-existence, because something that does not exist cannot be the destroyer of the cause. For something that is already established, there is no need for establishment, therefore something that already exists does not arise, because something that is already established does not need a cause. The time of arising is impossible, therefore there is no arising; when the effect is already established, there is no arising, and when the effect is not yet established, there is no arising, and if it does not arise in these two cases, then when does it arise? For the state of the effect being partially established and partially not established, which is in the process of arising, there is also no arising, because this would lead to the contradiction of existence and non-existence. Thus, if there is no arising in the three times, then when will there be arising? Because there is no time of arising. If it is said that the cause produces the effect, then it is meaningless for the cause to produce its own nature, and similarly, it is meaningless for the cause to produce another effect. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
