If it is argued that because the eyes can see forms and the ears can hear sounds, which are produced by the four elements, therefore by asserting their lack of inherent existence, the senses are obstructed, and if the senses do not exist, then the karmic results would also not exist. The senses for karmic results do exist, but what is obstructed is inherent existence. If it is said that the root verses also imply this, then the karmic results cannot be comprehended even with reasoning, because karma itself lacks inherent existence. Even if it had inherent existence, there would be faults such as repeated maturation or never maturing, so the results are inconceivable, like emanations arising from emanations. Although they lack inherent existence, the certainty of cause and effect, such as seeing with the eyes and hearing with the ears, cannot be denied, as it is said in the sutra: 'The karmic results of sentient beings are inconceivable; the wind causes the world to arise and change; oceans, mountains, and the immeasurable palaces of the gods are filled with seeds of jewels.' The clouds born of wind bring rain, and the wind scatters the clouds again. The wind causes the crops of the world to flourish, and the wind brings happiness to all beings.' Therefore, karmic results are inconceivable. This is the explanation of the refutation in the root verses. The refutation of consciousness is because the conditions are incomplete, so the five sense consciousnesses do not exist before the senses see and hear, etc. If consciousness arises after seeing and hearing, etc., then it becomes meaningless, because the senses have already grasped the object. Thirdly, if the sense consciousness and the mind consciousness arise simultaneously, then the sense organ that is the cause of seeing becomes meaningless, because things that arise simultaneously do not depend on each other and cannot be cause and effect, and because consciousness itself can perceive the object. It is also not valid to refute this by saying that the cause and effect of a lamp and light arising simultaneously is seen, because this is like using a bull's horn to negate itself, and because the false phenomena seen by worldly delusion do not hinder the examination of ultimate truth. When looking at a form, if one examines whether it has gone there or not, if the eye has the ability to go there, then it would be able to see distant objects for a long time, but because one can grasp the sun, moon, and stars as soon as one opens one's eyes, one does not need to look again. If it is said that seeing requires going and contacting, then why are very close eye medicine, probes, mirrors, and very distant high mountain peaks not clear? Because the first contact exists, and the second is going there and contacting. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because it has already gone. If it is not like that, then (the eye) will not grasp (things) without contact. Again, does one go after seeing, or does one go without seeing? If one says that one goes after seeing, then the place that has been gone to already exists, and there is no need to go again, because the purpose of going is to see. Since one has already seen, what is the point of going again? If one says that one goes without seeing, then the object that one wants to see will inevitably become false, just as a blind person cannot determine what he wants to see because he cannot see. The second examination is, if the eye grasps (things) without reaching there, then all the places that have been gone to will be seen, because for any object that has a goal, if it has not been to that place, then distance and obscuration will not exist, just like a wish-fulfilling jewel. This also has the potential to lead to being satisfied with seeing only a little bit. If one says that one does not look at oneself, so one does not look at other things either, then this shows that 'things' are like a lamp, manifesting from oneself to other things. If so, then by what cause can one grasp itself? If one can grasp, then it is contradictory to act on oneself, and no one has ever seen it like that. Preventing the aggregate from seeing things is because 'the eye' is the seer. Even if these three (the seer, the seen, and the act of seeing) are denied as a whole, they can still have different attributes. If one thinks that gathering in the same place can see things, then this has not been prevented, so it is easy to be satisfied with seeing only a little bit. Like this, seeing things is prevented by reason, but hearing sounds was not prevented before. If one wants to prevent hearing sounds, then one must prevent sounds from entering the ear. If the sound speaks and moves, then by what cause will it not become a speaker? Since it is a speaker, then it is not a sound. If the sound moves without speaking, then by what cause will the ear generate the consciousness of grasping the sound? If consciousness is not generated, it is because the sound moves secretly without speaking. Before hearing, one cannot judge whether it exists. If the sound is grasped only after touching the ear, then which sense will grasp the first sound that has not touched? If there is no grasper, then it cannot be called a sound. If the sound is a single thing separated from the eight kinds of dust, then how can one grasp it? If all the dust gathers together, then it is unreasonable to grasp only one of them, so do not think that all sounds will be grasped. If one says 'I saw it', then this illusion does not harm the truth. Before hearing, it will not become a sound, because that is too much. It is also unreasonable that there is no sound before hearing, and it only becomes a sound when one finally hears it, because this would lead to all things becoming sounds. These are all the faults of not grasping at the beginning. The sutra says: 'Pleasing sound...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
