Recitations, fire offerings, bathing, purification, auspiciousness, repentance, offerings, pills, general distribution, Brahmanical threads, and so on, with various physical and verbal actions, are external adornments done for the sake of gain and respect. The doctrines of most Naked Ascetics are to proclaim and display their own foolish thoughts, such as smearing the body with ashes, and they perform many practices that are not means to higher realms. The word 'most' indicates that even things like sweeping with peacock feathers, which are causes for higher realms, are also considered foolish. Such practices are mostly in accordance with samsara, and the hypocritical behaviors of Brahmins, as well as flattery, partiality, and various other actions, are the near causes for increasing afflictions and are obstacles to liberation. Therefore, the Buddha did not teach either of these to the Shakyas. What is the temporary result of these two? For example, from the knowledge of Brahmins, i.e., adopting a certain religion, foolish people in the world will respectfully say, 'This is a Brahmin who recites the Vedas.' Similarly, by enduring afflictions and suffering, such as nakedness and plucking hair, people in the world will admire the Naked Ascetics, saying, 'These are ascetics.' The reason for denying that it is Dharma is that the suffering of the Naked Ascetics is the result of past negative karma, therefore it cannot be Dharma, and the same applies to being born into a Brahmin family. Dharma is the means to higher realms and liberation, just as the body and senses are the result of karma and are therefore not Dharma. So, what is Dharma? The Buddha said, 'Dharma is...' Killing is one of the ten non-virtuous actions, and non-killing is the opposite, the ten virtuous actions. All actions that benefit others, such as the four means of gathering disciples, are included in non-harming. In short, the Dharma for attaining higher realms according to the Buddha is this. The emptiness of inherent existence and selflessness are the Dharma for attaining Nirvana and liberation. The Buddha taught that only these two are the Dharma for attaining higher realms and liberation. Therefore, abandoning evil Dharma and not engaging in this is the heretics' own sect, just as all beings in the world abhor evil rebirths, yet still cling to and love them. What reason makes you heretics abhor the Buddha's Dharma, which can reverse evil Dharma? It is the power of habitual tendencies that makes you cling to your own evil sect. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a fault! Therefore, just as a wise person abandons their bad rebirth and chooses a good place, you too should impartially choose this Dharma that is reasonable, because it is more capable than anything else of enabling those who possess wisdom and knowledge to attain the benefits of high status and liberation. For example, the Dharma of the Tathāgata benefits all who seek truth equally, like the sun, revealing without any faults such as attachment or aversion. Also, in the Stages of Meditation by the master Kamalashila (梵:Śāntarakṣita): 'The holy ones sever the stains of jealousy and so on, are insatiable with virtues, like an ocean of water. They discern and uphold the well-spoken teachings, like swans joyfully taking milk from water.' This is the explanation of the twelfth chapter on refuting views. Thirteenth Chapter: Refuting the Senses and Objects Discussing the Refutation of the Senses and Objects It is said in the scriptures that 'the eye sees form,' but the Samkhya (梵:Sāṃkhya) school believes that 'Prakṛti' is a constant transformation, and the Vaisheshika (梵:Vaiśeṣika) and Nyaya (梵:Nyāya) schools believe that 'Prakṛti' is a substance with branches, which has already been refuted, because a constant cause cannot produce an effect. The Sarvāstivāda school believes that the four great elements (earth, water, fire, and wind) and the eight types of atoms of color, smell, taste, and touch come together to be nominally called a vase, because the characteristics of a vase are all present. Therefore, seeing the color of the vase does not mean seeing all the atoms of the vase, so how can one say that the vase itself is seen directly? To this question, logicians believe that non-conceptual consciousness is direct perception. However, the Madhyamaka (梵:Madhyamaka) school, such as the master Chandrakirti (梵:Candrakīrti), believes that it is unreasonable to speak contrary to this for the sake of worldly affairs, because they believe that the object is direct perception, not consciousness. Therefore, consciousness arises in dependence on this. Consciousness itself cannot be a valid means of knowledge, because if it is said that non-deceptive consciousness is called a valid means of knowledge in the world, then the Bhagavan (梵:Bhagavān) has said that all conditioned phenomena are false and have the nature of deception, and that things exist in one way but appear in another way. If such things are also valid means of knowledge, then all consciousness would become valid means of knowledge. Therefore, it is understandable for worldly people to say that they directly see a vase, but it is unreasonable to think that they directly see the nature of things, because all aspects of the vase have not been completely seen. This intellect believes that in a dark room, one can directly see things such as sandalwood, brown sugar, and cotton simply by smelling the fragrance, tasting the sweetness, and feeling the soft touch. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
