Through the perspective of 'non-existence' to distinguish the three times—past, present, and future—and refute through this method: a future pot does not possess the states of present and past. What is the reason for this? It is because the past and present pots will not be delayed into the future. If they exist in the future, they would become eternal and unchanging things. If the first two times do not exist, then the future that relies on them (past and present) also does not exist, because the three are interdependent; if one does not exist, then all three do not exist. Here, the three times cannot independently exist without relying on other things, so they are represented by 'that' and 'that pot'. Among them, the present refers to the state where the pot is being produced and has not stopped. The past refers to the state where the pot has already vanished. The future refers to the state where the pot has not yet formed. Because there is no constant or impermanent time outside of things, the things of other times will exist at that specific time. These three intertwine and negate each other. If they exist in this way, things will not change and will become eternal and unchanging things. Therefore, the refutation is carried out by pointing out the fault of eternity. If the vanished past pot exists in the future in the form of the future, then the statement that the past does not exist in the future is not valid. Then, how would it become the past? It would become non-past because it exists in the nature of the future, just like the future itself. Furthermore, if the future does not exist in the present, then it becomes emptiness. If the future thing exists in the present with the nature of the future, then it will become the present, because it has now formed and exists, just like the present pot. If this is the case, the future cannot exist, and the past and present also do not exist, because without a basis for reliance, there is no object of reliance; if one does not exist, then all do not exist. Through this method, the externalists' view of time is refuted, and the internalists refute. Among them, the Sarvastivadins believe that conditioned phenomena such as pots exist in the present in the three times in the form of entities, and according to four theories, they will become different things. Venerable Dharmatrāta believes that the things of time are different, but the entity of the pot will not change. Venerable Ghosaka believes that the nature will change because one pot has all the natures of the three times. Venerable Vasumitra believes that the state will change, and even if it changes, the entity is still one. Venerable Buddhadeva believes that the past and future are only different. They say this. If you say 'future,' then what is lacking now? If it is lacking, it will become non-existent. If all times exist, then... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If all things were permanent, then they would always exist, because the entities of the three times (past, present, future) do not change. If they change, they would perish. If actions were permanent, then they would contradict the scriptures of impermanence. If the past has passed, and has transcended the past, then why would it be the past? Just as yogurt separated from milk cannot become milk again. How can what has not separated from the past become the past? Because you think that all actions of the three times exist now, so the past also has the action of producing results. Holding is the present cause producing the present result, and giving is the past action producing the present fruition. Actions exist in causes and conditions, and are different from causes and conditions. Therefore, if what has not separated from the past exists in the present with actions, then why would it become the past? Because all present things will become the past. Or, if it transcends the characteristics of the past, then it cannot become the past; if the present has not separated from the past, then it cannot become the past, because the characteristics of the present cannot become the past. Refuting the future: If the future has already arisen and exists, then it will become the present. If it has not arisen, then it will be eternal like space. If it has not arisen, but is impermanent because of destruction, because causes and conditions will make the future perish and become the present, then the past will not have destruction, because there are no causes and conditions that can make it become the past or the present. It will always be considered eternal. The past and present become impermanent, because the past has ended and the present is self-nature. Since outside of these two, the third, the future, is non-existent, impermanence will not occur, and the three times are impossible. If the future exists in the present, because it will arise when causes and conditions are complete, then if the things that arise in the future previously existed, then those who speak of no cause or destiny will not be refuted, and are the same as them. Although the commentary explains it this way, it would be easier to understand if it were explained like the Samkhya school, that the result exists in the cause. If the result arises from the cause, then if it previously existed in the cause, then only one result will be repeatedly produced in samsara. If the Buddhas, etc., foresaw the future and made predictions by knowing the object of prayer, then it exists, then non-existent things like the son of a Yaksha would also be seen, because there is no difference without self-nature. Knowing the future...
