Thus it is said. If it is asserted that the knowing 'self' is permanent, then the principals of cause and effect as the agent (Pradhāna) will be reversed and become meaningless, just as if fire were permanent, firewood would be meaningless. Just as fire blazes from firewood, the manner in which knowledge arises in cyclic existence from the five objects of the principal has already been explained. A permanent thing does not depend on conditions, therefore it does not depend on the principal at all. Since dependence has already been explained, dependence is interdependent, without inherent existence, and impermanent. If it is said that just as the substance of a tree remains unmoving until it is destroyed, the tree is permanent and the movement is impermanent, the stillness does not depend on the wind, but the movement does, then, just like that, the existence of the Purusha of such a tree's substance does not depend on the principal, therefore it is of a permanent nature, and the existence of the knowledge of the five objects, which is like movement, does not arise without the principal. If it is said like that, it is not reasonable, because the non-knowing Purusha would become inanimate, and because it possesses mind, it would be considered mind, which has been refuted before, and it would also lead to the number of knowables increasing to twenty-six. If, fearing those faults, it is thought that the Purusha in other states is a realm of knowledge, the cause or seed of knowledge, and in other states there is a manifestation of knowledge, just as iron sometimes combines with fire and sometimes separates, sometimes melts and sometimes freezes. If it is thought like that, then, precisely because of that, the Purusha changes and becomes impermanent, because the manifestation of knowledge exists or does not exist depending on the existence or non-existence of the principal. Some of the Samkhya school say: 'Our knowing 'self' is only connected to the root of both, the 'self' or Purusha that pervades all beings is as vast as the sky, and only a tiny particle of mind is connected to it, and just because of that, the 'self' is knowing, therefore there are none of the faults mentioned before.' If it is thought like that, then, precisely because of that, the nature of that 'self' is seen as knowing or not knowing, because the 'self' is a substance and the mind is its quality, so the nature of the 'self' is not knowledge, and even if it is connected to a tiny particle, it will not change it, just as a tiny amount of salt cannot make the Ganges salty. This can also be said to be the view of the Vaisheshika school. If it is said that one 'self' pervades everything, then why do others not think of that 'self' as 'I'? Because others will be attached to the 'self' of others, because it is common, so there will be a common attachment to common things. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is just like that. If someone says, 'Because I am obscured by others, others will not be attached to me,' then it is unreasonable for oneself to obscure oneself, because all 'selves' are one. If oneself obscures oneself, then oneself will not be attached to oneself. For the Sāṃkhya school, they believe that Prakṛti ( प्रकृति, Prakṛti, Nature/Primordial Matter) with the three guṇas (गुण, guṇa, qualities/virtues) in equilibrium recognizes the desire of puruṣa (पुरुष, puruṣa, Self/Spirit) to experience external objects, and then acts as the agent of change, and they claim that Prakṛti does not possess jñāna (ज्ञान, jñāna, knowledge/wisdom) in any way. Those people are no different from madmen, because their cognition is inverted and confused. Not understanding that the three guṇas (गुण, guṇa, qualities/virtues) can easily create all changes is because they consider the enjoyer to be 'I'. This view is neither logical nor in accordance with worldly common sense. For the Vaiśeṣika school, they believe that 'I' is both the agent of good and evil and the enjoyer of its fruits, which is untenable, because everything that has an effect is impermanent, and everything that is created is bound to change. You believe that 'I' pervades everything, but something that pervades everything has no effect, because it does not appear in new times and spaces, just like unconditioned space. If 'I' has no effect, then it is like a non-existent rabbit's horn, because something without effect cannot exist. Your school believes in a mere entity without action, which is also incorrect. The sutra says: 'All conditioned phenomena are momentary. Where can there be abiding and action?' The meaning of this is to negate the action of 'I', not to negate the action of dependent origination. If you do not accept dependent origination, then you are not a Buddhist. Since your 'I' has been refuted, why are you not happy with no-self? Because from the perspective of only observing dependent origination, all nets of views will be broken, thereby attaining heaven and liberation. If 'I' is inherently existent, then everyone's realization should be the same, but that is not the case. Here, 'karma' refers to the Sāṃkhya and Vaiśeṣika schools, etc. Some people believe that there are different 'selves' residing in each body, and these 'selves' pervade everything like space. Some people believe that just as one moon can pervade all water surfaces, one 'I' can pervade everything, because 'I' pervades everything, and the sukha (सुख, sukha, happiness) and duḥkha (दुःख, duḥkha, suffering) of 'I' pervade everything. The Jains believe that 'I' is the body itself. 'The Jains say that life shrinks and expands as the body shrinks and expands.' Your view is one-sided. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
