Gradually receding and completely ceasing, one becomes free from craving for the five sense objects of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. At that time, one considers the permanently abiding consciousness to be liberation. To refute this view: When a 'self' without craving attains liberation, what is the use of having consciousness? At that time, consciousness should have disappeared because all its objects and changes have vanished. Alternatively, at the time of liberation, the 'self' is without craving, so it should not have consciousness because its five sense objects have disappeared. This view holds that the Purusha (individual) cognizes things through consciousness, while Prakriti (nature) cognizes the desires of the Purusha and manifests various changes to fulfill those desires. The Purusha's approach is: 'To achieve the purpose, the chief (Prakriti) actively engages, just like a dance performed for the audience.' Just as milk, though without consciousness, is the cause of the calf's growth, similarly, the chief (Prakriti) engages to cause the proliferation of beings. Therefore, in this case, since the desires of the Purusha and the subject of cause and effect do not exist, consciousness without a cause is unreasonable. Then, is there no consciousness at that time? Even if one thinks there is consciousness at that time, it does not exist, just like space, because it is neither matter nor consciousness. The view that consciousness is inherent like the heat of fire is also wrong, because it is said in the praise: 'Without consciousness, there is no object; without an object, there is no consciousness. Therefore, you said that consciousness and object are both empty.' At that time, even if consciousness does not exist, does the ability to generate consciousness exist? If there is a 'self' with consciousness in liberation, then there may be seeds dependent on it, but since there is no object to depend on, the dependence does not exist. If the liberated 'self' does not exist, will samsara never end? Since the 'self' does not exist, the idea that samsara will not end does not exist, because by practicing the path of non-self, we exhaust the cause of karma and afflictions, and the fruit of the aggregates. Therefore, all the continuities of the imputed 'self' inside and outside are cut off, which is what we consider to be liberation. Therefore, it is certain that for those who are liberated from the suffering of samsara, the eternal 'self' as conceived by outsiders does not exist, because the change of bondage and liberation is impossible. Therefore, in the state of liberation, the complete exhaustion of the appropriated aggregates as the basis for the imputed 'self' is absolutely correct. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is called liberation. As stated in the commentary on the *Hundred Verses* : 'The body is destroyed, feelings are cooled, perception ceases, formations are pacified, and consciousness disappears. Such is the true end.' The *Praise of the Exalted* says: 'The Samkhyas and others say that the self is the cause of existence. You have entered into peace, like a flame that is extinguished and cannot be counted.' As explained above, the Madhyamikas consider the conventional truth of worldly conduct to be supreme in the establishment of the two truths. Those who propound philosophical tenets, both internal and external, do not fully comprehend the ultimate truth through logical analysis, because worldly conduct has some validity, whereas the establishment of the ultimate truth by those who propound tenets has no logical validity whatsoever. This treatise is a summary, and from the perspective of reason, everything is as it is. This is what is being shown. Many irrelevant explanations have been made regarding this, but they are without essence. The explanation of the *Ninth Chapter: Refuting Permanence* is complete. *Tenth Chapter: Refuting the Self* In explaining the refutation of the self, non-Buddhists assert two kinds of self: internal and external. The first is believed to reside in the body and senses, experiencing the fruits of karma. This is refuted by 'When,' etc. If the internal self is these three (body, senses, and experiencer), then in samsara, it must always be these three. If they change mutually, the concept of a permanent self collapses. Therefore, not knowing the absence of self, one thinks 'I am male, female, or neuter,' and thus cycles in samsara. For example, 'Doubtful consciousness can cause poisoning, even if the poison has not entered the body, one will faint.' Similarly, ignorant children cling to 'I' and 'mine,' their perception of self is incorrect, and they constantly experience birth and death.' This is what the sutra says. Refuting the external self: If it is said that the four or five great elements, which benefit or harm the internal self, have the nature of male, female, or neuter, and therefore the self of these three exists in the things that produce them, then 'When' etc. explains that the four great elements do not have the characteristics of these three, therefore these three do not exist, and the bodies produced in dependence on them are distinguished as male, female, or neuter. For those who assert the absence of inherent existence, various changes occur due to conditions, but for those who assert inherent existence, nothing can change its nature. Even if there are no characteristics of male, etc., if they are the subjects of these characteristics, then space, etc., would also become self. If this view is established, then the self would become a reality, like the heat of fire. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
