In terms of its true meaning, neither permanence nor impermanence is established, just like a rabbit's horn. The *Madhyamakālaṃkāra* (Ornament of the Middle Way) states: 'Space and so forth are not created; they only appear in name.' The *Guhyācintyā* (Inconceivable Secret Sutra) states: 'Tranquil Wisdom, space cannot be said by anyone to be permanent or impermanent; likewise, the body of the *Tathāgata* (如来) cannot be said by anyone to be permanent or impermanent.' The *Lokāyata* (顺世论者) heretics claim: 'All beings are produced by time; all creatures are gathered by time; time causes sleep and awakening; therefore, time is difficult to overcome.' They believe that everything is done by time, so they assert that if time exists, it is because the movement and changes of things like winter and summer can be observed, so time exists, and because it has no cause, it is permanent. If time is permanent, then the result should always arise, because it does not depend on other conditions. If it depends on other conditions such as seeds, then it is controlled by other conditions. Therefore, time will become a result, so like smoke, it will become impermanent. If there is no result, then it cannot be established as a cause, because it is too extreme. If it is a cause caused by the result, then all causes will become results. The *Śūnyatāsaptati* (Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness) states: 'If there is a result, there is a cause; if there is no result, there is no cause. If you say there is and there is not, it contradicts all three times.' When a cause changes, it becomes the cause of producing other things. Time is the cause of various movements and changes, but it must also change itself, so it should not be permanent. Generally, the permanent dharma (法) as the cause of the result, the thing of its result either does not arise from the cause, or does not arise from the unchanging cause, but these two cannot be the cause, and it is also unreasonable to exist simultaneously with the unchanging result, so it will become self-arising without a cause. Therefore, thinking that the permanent dharma is the cause is a reversed discrimination. The so-called 'thing' means that it prevents the incompatible nature of permanence and impermanence, but does not prevent its incompatible forms. The above refutes the heretical view that permanent dharma is the cause. The *Karmashataka* (Hundred Deeds Sutra) states: 'When the assembly arrives at the time, the fruit will ripen by itself.' Therefore, karma is considered a condition. The commentary says: 'The fire and water produced from the fire mirror and water mirror are also caused by the changes in the light of the sun and moon.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In all places, things cannot arise from a permanent cause. Refuting those particularists who believe that under the impetus of sentient beings' karma, minute, indivisible, material atoms are permanent, and from them arise various container and content worlds, because they believe that atoms gather together, combine, and adhere to form coarse matter. Then, some aspects of the atoms' combination are causes, and some aspects that are not combined are not causes, therefore, since they are diverse, like various drawings, they cannot be permanent. The uncombined aspects also cannot form coarse matter, because then even atoms that are spaced apart would form coarse matter. If one thinks that atoms do not combine through one aspect, but combine through spheres, then there would be no such fault. If one thinks that this cause, sphericity, and lack of directionality are the characteristics of atoms, then coarse matter would also become entirely spherical, because if edges appear, all combinations would collapse. Furthermore, if minute atoms dissolve into them, all coarse matter would become as small as minute atoms, so that the senses could not perceive them. Although because one atom is missing in the position of one atom, cause atoms and result coarse matter would not be considered equal in volume, and coarse matter would not exceed the scope of the senses. However, when atoms gather, they become impermanent due to movement, and because they have directional parts, they become non-singular, these problems remain. If one thinks that these faults only occur at the time of formation, but at the time of non-formation, because there are no parts, there would be no such faults. Even then, atoms face each other, so there would be directions such as east, therefore there would be directional parts. Because there are directional parts, the atom is called coarse matter and is shown, therefore it must be coarse, because it has directional parts, like a pot. When atoms gather and form coarse matter under the impetus of sentient beings' karma, if they gather, the atom will absorb the front direction with the front and press, and release the back direction with the back, therefore it will become two states of absorption and release, then the atom will not move, because it does not have two states of absorption and release, like the sky. If gathering, it will become with parts, if not gathering, it will not form, therefore without parts and formation are contradictory. If one says that this is seen by yogis with divine eyes, then one must ask, which atom is seen? Because the first, middle, and last, that is, the front, middle, and back parts, these three are not obvious, who can see them? Because it is not an object of observation, therefore the argument that it is seen is not reliable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
