Therefore, 'Tathāgata' is not merely 'Capable One' (Thubpa), but one who has realized all things as they are. This is a decorative statement. Its meaning is as follows: The Sutra says: 'Whatever arises even slightly is subject to destruction.' It also says that the cause of arising leads to aging and death, that is, whatever arises must be destroyed. The teachers of the heretics (mu stegs), such as the Samkhya (ser skya), Vaisheshika (gzegs gzan), Nyaya (rkang mig), and Nirgrantha (zad byed) schools, believe that arising things are permanent, which contradicts valid cognition (tshad ma, प्रमाण) and is not the reality of things. 'Tathā' means 'thus,' and 'gata' includes the two meanings of 'abandonment' (spangs) and 'realization' (rtogs), which is a word derived from complete explanation. 'Gshegs pa' is a translation that does not fall into either side, and has three metaphorical meanings. For example, 'Tathāgata' has the meaning of being extremely beautiful, like a person with a handsome appearance; it has the meaning of never retreating, like a disease that has been completely cured; it has the meaning of complete perfection, like a fully filled vase. These three meanings respectively indicate that the Buddha is free from the desires of the heretics, and is superior to the Shravakas (nyan rang), Learners (slob pa), and Non-learners (mi slob pa), and his own benefit is complete and extremely excellent. This is the view of the teacher Dharmakirti (slob dpon phyogs kyi glang pos). This meaning is also explained in the 'Pramāṇavārttika' (rnam 'grel): 'Abandoning causes, possessing three qualities, Sugata (bde gshegs).' Because 'gshegs' means realization, it transcends heretics and learners and non-learners, therefore, he can show the wisdom and means to benefit others. Alternatively, 'gata' has the meaning of 'speaking' (smra ba), that is, the body, speech, and mind of the Buddha (thub pa) speak in accordance with reality, while other teachers do not. The followers of the Ajivika (gzegs gzan), especially the Vaisheshika school, believe that there are six eternal entities, namely, self (bdag, आत्मा, ātman, self), time (dus, काल, kāla, time), space (phyogs, दिक्, dik, space), and void (nam mkha', आकाश, ākāśa, space) are entities that are omnipresent, eternal, and without function, mind (yid, मनस्, manas, mind) is an eternal and functional completely divided entity, and the atoms of the four great elements ('byung bzhi'i rdul) are considered to be eternal, while the gross ones are considered to be non-eternal. Because they do not understand this existence and permanence, they say that the Buddha is not omniscient. In order to refute this view, we say that wherever and whenever any 'existence' that does not depend on a cause, that is, a thing, does not exist. Therefore, there is no permanent thing anywhere or at any time. A thing (chos can) cannot be permanent, because it must depend on a cause, just like a pot. Therefore, those permanent things cannot be without cause. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If it is without a cause, it becomes non-existent, like a rabbit's horn. If it has a cause, it becomes impermanent, like sound. Therefore, the Buddha, who knows the reality of all knowable things, has said that things that arise from no cause are neither existent nor non-existent. As it is said in the sutra: 'The wise are deeply devoted to the law of dependent origination and do not rely on extreme views. Things with causes and conditions can be known, while things without causes and conditions do not exist.' If, because impermanent things are seen to be created here, one thinks that the uncreated 'self' and so on are permanent, then because created things are seen to exist here, the uncreated permanent 'self' and so on will become non-existent, because the reasoning is the same. Similarly, the refutation is the same for the Samkhya school's assertion of the permanent and uncreated 'self' and 'Prakriti', and for the Vaisheshika and Ishvara schools' assertion of permanent and uncreated things. The Kashmir Vaibhashikas assert: 'There are three uncreated permanents: space and the two cessations.' The 'cessation' they speak of is space, and 'prthagjana' is the Sravaka. The permanent substance is not seen in these three, which is consistent with both the wise and worldly people. Both of them merely use the term 'space' for the formless, and it does not have characteristics such as hardness like the four elements. Similarly, the two 'cessations' are merely terms for the absence of what is to be negated, and there is no characteristic of a real entity. If space is permanent because it pervades the ten directions, and if it is not permanent, then the claim of permanence is not valid, like a pot. If one thinks this way, then the 'pervasion' put forth as the reason is itself not established. 'Cessation' is directional; the east and other directions only pervade that direction and do not exist in all of space, because if the space of the east also existed in the west and so on, the west would become the east. If this is admitted, then the west would become the east. Therefore, the directionality of space, with its east and other directions, is very clear because it is related to the ten directions. This shows that if space has no parts, then the space of the east is the same as the space of the west, and east and west would become one; the space of the pot is the same as the space of the cloth, and the two would become one. It is impossible for things with different substrates to have the same nature. If they are not one but have parts, then it will not pervade everything, like a pot. Because it is impossible to find a directional space that is different from the ten directions, this is just a name. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
