If there were no atoms, would the gross components of the world become seeds without a cause? If, when a fruit is produced, the cause disappears, then the gross fruit decomposes the atoms, and the cause atoms are not eternal. If, like fire being produced, the flint does not disappear, and the cause atoms remain, then if that were the case, there would be no result when there is a cause, and it would not be cause and effect. Just as there are pots and blankets, etc., because of different places, although this is explained, it is untenable, because separated causes produce results in the place where the cause ceases, and combined causes produce results in different places without ceasing the continuation of the cause. The word 'obstructed' indicates that non-composite space, etc., are unobstructed eternal existences. For the Buddha, because it is not a manifestation, it is non-existent, and therefore not spoken of. We believe that the eight material atoms, i.e., the four elements and form, etc., that make up pots, etc., are considered to be eight atoms, but we do not want the indivisible parts considered by the Śrāvakayāna and Vaibhāṣika schools. The Mind-Only school believes that both atoms and grossness are negated by reason and considered to be mind. This contradicts the worldly wise by negating grossness. It is impossible to prove the subtle atoms of mind, and it is impossible to apply the four characteristics of conditioned phenomena sequentially or simultaneously to the mere mind. Because causeless action is also impossible, the conventional truth should be acknowledged as it is known in the world, and reason should rely on the meaning seen by the noble ones. It is wrong to say in the commentary that there is no difference between atoms and mind and conventional truth, because this is said from dividing a dust mote in a sunbeam into one forty-ninth part. Because this has not been proven by valid cognition, it is a false conventional truth. From the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, it should be understood that atoms are without body. The Śrāvakayāna Vaibhāṣikas believe that Nirvāṇa is the cessation attained separately through analysis, is an eternal, virtuous substance, exists in the realm of wisdom beyond the world, does not produce wisdom that focuses on itself, and is non-composite. They believe that cessation is the karma and afflictions that bind samsara, is the truth of origination, because they bind samsara, and suffer in various ways from the three sufferings, is the truth of suffering. The antidote to these two (the truth of origination and the truth of suffering) is to practice the two selflessnesses, is the truth of the path. Other than these three, liberation is the Nirvāṇa of the truth of cessation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there is a substance, then it is uncompounded. Since all actions are considered empty, nothing arises from it, so it cannot be said to be a substantial liberation, because it has no sign of not being deluded. If it is said that it prevents afflictions and birth, like a dam, and it can be known by the sign that these two do not arise, then this is not certain, because it applies to non-things and some material things. Some teachers say: 'Liberation means that nothing arises at all, because it is liberated from the other three truths, just like the nature of the inexpressible.' In the Ornament of the Middle Way, it says: 'The wisdom arising from meditation, for the schools that speak of conditioned and unconditioned, is also not one, because they are related to sequential knowledge.' This is blocked by one and many. Therefore, it is only called 'cessation' because the continuum of afflictions and birth is cut off and no longer arises. Therefore, for such a nirvana, since there are no aggregates and no person who takes the aggregates, where do these two pass into nirvana? Since the three valid means of cognition do not see it, what is nirvana? Because there is no object other than the self and the aggregates. Therefore, it should not be a permanent substance, and there is no mutual dependence between it and the aggregates. The Samkhyas consider the way of samsara and nirvana to be dividing all knowable things into two: the self (Purusha) and nature (Prakriti). Nature has a balanced state of the three gunas (qualities), and from this arises changes, namely buddhi (intellect) and ahamkara (ego), and from ahamkara arise the five sense organs (eyes, etc.), the five action organs (hands, feet, anus, genitals, speech), and manas (mind), which combines both, as well as the five sounds, etc., and the five great elements arising from the five meanings, totaling twenty-three. Purusha is the eternal person of awareness, always existing in the bag by nature. Prakriti does all the things of samsara and nirvana, but Purusha has no action. Because of the action of Prakriti, the gunas are obscured by darkness, so they mistakenly think that 'I' is an ignorant mind, without the power to disturb the root. Just as a blind person cannot see for himself, but is carried by a sighted person, Prakriti leads Purusha into samsara through action. Like a blind man and a cripple, the relationship between the two causes samsara. As long as Purusha and Prakriti are mistaken for being undifferentiated, one will wander in samsara. When the difference between the two is recognized, through habit, the changes such as buddhi will cease.
