If the object of clinging is definite, then it shows that 'that' does not exist. The 'I' you speak of is not the 'I' of others like 'me', therefore it is not the self-nature 'I', because it is uncertain, like a dream. Therefore, for many impermanent and dependent things, one mistakenly thinks that there are three characteristics contrary to this, thus generating the clinging to 'I'. Furthermore, just as the body transforms into various forms in life after life, the inner puruṣa (Tibetan: སྐྱེས་བུ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: पुरुष, Sanskrit Romanization: puruṣa, Chinese literal meaning: person) 'I' will also transform into various forms. If you admit this, then the 'I' cannot be separated from the body and be permanent, because it changes with the body, just like a part of the body. If you say that the appearances of body and speech are driven by consciousness, so there is an 'I', then generally, without touch there is no driving, therefore life, that is, the 'I', will not become the driver of these two either, because it has no touch. The 'I' does not exist in the body according to time, nor does it have a direction, therefore it is not permanent. If the mind also has no body and touch, therefore it will not become the driver of body and speech, then, because the mind has the touch of the aggregation of three, all sentient beings are bodies with touch, but you do not think that the 'I' has touch. Alternatively, we think that the mind is the cause of all things, and the touch of the wind produced by it makes the body and speech move, as it is said: 'The effort of desire, the action, the wind that is produced goes to another place, those that arise without interruption, are like the lamp of a traveler.' If the 'I' also produces wind and makes it move, then the 'I' either moves or does not move. If it sometimes moves, then the mover will become impermanent. Therefore, there is no 'I' independent of the mind. If I seek a method of non-harm and want to know what is the cause of this permanent 'I', this is contradictory, so it should be ridiculed. The meaning is that you should not seek a method of non-harm, because for permanent things, nothing can harm them, whether it is fire, weapons, poison, or hail, etc., just like there is no need to protect diamonds with woodworms. Furthermore, you should not seek the Dharma that protects you from the suffering of samsara, because permanent things are not harmed, like the sky. If because you remember past lives you think there is a permanent 'I', because if it is not permanent, then it is impossible to remember things that have disappeared before, then, in order to show uncertainty, if you remember that the body in the past life had injuries, therefore the current body is also permanently injured, then why do you think the body is not permanent? You should think that the body is also permanent. If the previous 'I' does not exist now, then the two 'I's are one. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If appearance and recollection are like that, then what is it? It is like an illusion without inherent existence. Due to the differences in causes such as homogeneity and heterogeneity, as well as karma and samadhi, the dharmas of the three times (past, present, and future) appear in various states, which is inconceivable. Just as in the attic of a storehouse, although there are no footprints of pigeons on the grass, it appears as if pigeons have landed there, similarly, although the past and present have not actually arrived there, they appear as if they have arrived there. Likewise, inconceivable acts of union are also like that. Therefore, in order to refute the heretical views on the grandness of the inner and outer self, and to distinguish between sentient and insentient views, when refuting, the Vaisheshika school believes that the self is matter. In the 'Praise of Excellence', it is mentioned: 'The Vaisheshika school believes that the self has intelligence and is pervasive. If you think it has no intelligence, then it is as useless as wood.' In the 'Compendium of Action and Suchness', it is mentioned: 'The characteristics of the self according to other schools are that it has attributes such as desire and pleasure, is the support, the agent, and the enjoyer, and is not mind but related to mind.' Therefore, for the Vaisheshika school, it is impossible for the self to generate recollection through its own nature, because it is essentially matter. If it can recollect, then it will become mind. If it is said that the self is matter, but because it is related to mind, it can recollect and cognize, then that sentient being related to mind is not mind itself, and that person will also become impermanent, because he is not the nature of mind. Moreover, whether he is a cognizer will change depending on whether he cognizes the object of mind. If that self is not mind itself, but is considered mind because it is related to mind, then the self related to non-mind will also become non-mind, because the reason is the same. The Vaisheshika school believes that the self has thirteen attributes, namely the five senses, pleasure and pain, intention, hatred, dharma, non-dharma, habit, and effort. Therefore, the life that has attributes such as pleasure, i.e., the self, since contradictory things such as pleasure cannot exist simultaneously, will see various kinds of pleasure, etc. When it has a certain attribute, it will see that it does not have other attributes. Therefore, by associating 'self' with these attributes, when the attributes become multiple, the thing that has these attributes will also become multiple. When refuting the Samkhya school's self, the 'Praise of Excellence' mentions: 'The Samkhya school believes that the characteristic of the self is that it has intelligence. If you do not think so, then the self will have the attribute of impermanence.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
