It is said to be 'completely destroyed.' As it is said. For some, such as the Vaiśeṣikas (a school of Indian philosophy), they believe that it is impossible to point out things like a dust particle, one millionth of a hair tip, the size of a mustard seed, or the size of a thumb like a clear glass ball, or the size of Mount Meru, but they prove its existence by the sign of targeted action. And the wise who hold the doctrine of the Buddha see it as non-self. Furthermore, if the 'self' is permanent, there would be no harm from afflictions and suffering; if there is no harm, there is no possibility of liberation from harm. Therefore, the permanent 'self' that any non-Buddhist believes in cannot attain liberation, because there is no difference between before and after, and it is impossible to eliminate old faults and generate new merits through effort, just like space. Also, if there is a 'self', then thinking 'no-self' is unreasonable, because it is a delusion. If one recognizes the truth of the 'self', ultimately liberation from suffering will also become false, because in the Buddhist doctrine, Nirvana exists, and clinging to the existence of the 'self' is a reversed cognition. If, according to your view, recognizing the truth of the 'self' is Nirvana, then from self-grasping, afflictions will arise, and then there will be rebirth or transformation again. As it is said: 'If one understands the twenty-five principles, whether with hair, shaved head, or topknot, in whatever form one exists, one will attain liberation, without any doubt.' And in Nyāyakusumāñjali (A Shower of Reason) it says: 'By yoga, cutting off the qualities of the mind, etc., of the self, uprooting them from the root, the one who dwells in the mind thinking there is a self, this is known as the liberation of the Vaiśeṣikas.' Therefore, if there is a 'self', then liberation is impossible both internally and externally. If there is no 'self' at the time of liberation, then there should be no 'self' even when not liberated, because for those who originally have no 'self' in their minds, what is seen is the self-nature, and the scriptures say that one sees the inherent Dharma nature. Therefore, seeing nothing is not a supreme view. If one says 'there is liberation in this case', then it is difficult to explain. Some explain that seeing the state without sudden defilements is said to be the inherent self-nature. If the 'self' is not permanent, then impermanent things cannot have continuity, so one will fall into nihilism. If that is the case, then how does the continuity of grass, etc., exist from the first kalpa until now? If it is true that impermanent things have no continuity, then no one should generate afflictions such as ignorance and attachment, so there is no fault of nihilism. Even if we assume that the 'self' exists, the five aggregates of form, etc., of internal and external samsara and nirvana, each arise, perish, and abide from their respective different causes.

Because I do not see 'seeing' as the 'agent', it is not the cause. This elaboration exists when the measure is ascertained. If something exists, what will change? Other than that, it is the cause of it. If it is a concept, then the causes of all things will be infinite.' That is what is said. Showing it through specific examples, for example, the seed is produced by the previous cause, and the fruit—the sprout, is also considered to be produced by the cause. Two impermanent things show that there is no permanent cause and effect. Showing the way to avoid the extremes of permanence and annihilation through dependent origination, that is, 'because', things change because the causes are complete, so the fruit continuously arises, therefore the dependent origination of samsara and nirvana will not be cut off. This refutes the Carvaka's view that there are no past and future lives, therefore samsara and nirvana have no continuity. The Mimamsakas believe that defilement is the essence of the mind, therefore they believe that there is no nirvana, which refutes this wrong view. 'Things reverse' means that if the cause reverses, the fruit will also reverse, therefore dependent origination avoids the extreme of permanence. This refutes the Samkhya, Mimamsakas, and Ishvaravadins, etc., who believe that the cause is permanent and does not reverse, therefore the fruit is permanently produced. For a detailed explanation of these views, please refer to 'Ornament of Tenets'. The Two Truths say: 'Because it arises from a cause, therefore, why would it be annihilated? If it reverses, then for the concept, how can it be said to be permanent?' The explanation that applying the word 'things' separately to cause and effect is incorrect. This also shows that all dharmas are not established by their own nature. The explanation of the Tenth, 'Refutation of Self', is completed. The Eleventh, 'Refutation of Time'. In refuting the view of time, even if the four elements, space, and seeds, etc., exist, sprouts, flowers, and plants, etc., will not grow, therefore it is necessary to rely on the factor of time, and time is permanent.' This is the view of the Tirthikas who believe that time is the cause, refuting this view because time does not exist independently of things, because it is not visible, and cannot be experienced like feelings, etc., nor can it be perceived by root consciousness like forms and sounds, etc. It also cannot be proven by inference, because for anything that has not been proven by direct perception, its pervasiveness cannot be determined. Moments, instants, and short periods of time, etc., are all calculated according to the movement of the sun, and have no connection with time, therefore they are not valid reasons. There is also no other infallible reason. Therefore…… --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
