Suffering arises from attachment due to desire, suffering arises from hatred due to unprovoked anger, and suffering arises from ignorance due to not knowing what to accept or reject. Because these three do not understand suffering, they perceive suffering as happiness, and thus constantly suffer in samsara. Showing that contradictory things cannot coexist, such as phlegm being the water element and bile being the fire element, and attachment and aversion being contradictory in one object. Ignorance does not contradict the two, so it can coexist. Showing the means to immediately abandon them, for attachment, using one's own body like a slave and not caring for the body is the remedy, because attachment has no chance to arise. For hatred, treating it like a king, offering it with sweet words, food, clothing, etc., and cherishing it, is the remedy. If ignorance coexists with one of the two, it should be treated with the remedies for both. If ignorance does not coexist with the two, it should be treated with wisdom. Ignorance arises first in the morning because it is related to sleepiness and lethargy, and phlegm is predominant. Anger arises at noon because many tasks are performed and bile is predominant. Attachment arises in the evening because tasks are stopped, food makes the body plump, and wind is predominant. The commentary says: 'Whoever knows the order of the afflictions, and cultivates the method to subdue them, he will eliminate them, like the king of doctors treating diseases.' Attachment is like a friend but not a friend, showing a similar appearance, saying to it: 'You are not afraid of me and are not beneficial, but harmful.' Thus connecting, because attachment is very difficult to abandon, it should be abandoned without giving it a chance to arise, like King Kasyapa Rishi abandoning the kingdom and going to the forest to protect himself from criticism. Hatred arises in the form of sound, and ignorance arises in a state that is neither of the two, so both are easy to abandon. Attachment arises from the habitual tendencies accumulated since beginningless time, and from causes such as desirable objects, like a spear and a bird's wings, which can be separated, so it is easy to abandon. The former (hatred) is difficult to abandon because the habitual tendencies always remain in the mind, so wisdom is needed. The persistence of hatred is due to prolonged resentment and the commission of great sins, etc., and the ultimate result is exhaustion. Just as the body of flesh and blood relies on the senses of the body, etc., ignorance exists with everything, thus connecting, because it does not understand or recognize the truth.

Even a feather adornment, if missing, is like a sense without a body. Abandoning it refers to 'depending'. Showing the characteristics of using the three poisons is to always indulge in dancing, etc., as well as laughter, coquetry, garlands, decorations, colors, fragrances, flowers, etc., liking to be givers, enjoyers, cleaners, sweet-talkers, and gentle people, and so on, as well as happiness and creation, etc. The opposite of this is using hatred. Using a mixture of the two is using ignorance, and through these, it can be inferred whether he possesses these characteristics. Showing the method of taming these is 'Buddha' (Sangs rgyas, Awakened One), which is goodness, abandoning all happiness, practicing one meal a day, not accepting food afterward, wearing only three Dharma robes, wearing felt clothes, using a duster, living in cemeteries, under trees, without shelter, according to regulations, walking freely, accepting whatever is obtained, being barefoot, practicing seated meditation, etc., staying near the Guru because the Guru will be his companion in discipline. Hatred is the opposite of this, living in secluded places, etc. Ignorance is a mixture of the two, depending on which of the two it is mixed with. For example, just as a Brahmin possessed by a demon is subdued with impure substances. Taming hatred is that being angry at someone who has no ability to harm and is powerful shows that one has no self-respect; if one is angry at someone who has the ability to harm, it shows that one has no compassion, therefore anger is the lowest. Furthermore, unpleasant sounds exhaust previously created sins, and you, who are ignorant and unholy, do you not want your sins to be purified? Unpleasant sounds themselves do not cause harm like the heat of fire, just as the speaker is not harmed. Therefore, thinking that one's own discrimination harms others is one's own fault. In the worldly code, it is said that the abuser should be punished, which is wrong, because praising sweet-talkers will also become offerings, because the reasons are the same. Therefore, the reasons are the same, but those with reasons are not the same, so this is not प्रमाण (pramāṇa, valid cognition). If the fault being slandered actually exists, then knowing this, what should be done to the one who speaks the truth, and what should be said to the one who speaks falsely? Because the one who speaks falsely shows that he himself is flawed. Therefore, the wise should tolerate those who speak both truth and falsehood. Merely hearing unpleasant sounds from an inferior person is enough to generate renunciation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
