Here resides the table of contents. The Third Chapter, composed by the Three Brahmin Brothers. The Fourth Chapter: How King Ashoka Acted. Now, the deeds of King Ashoka will be explained: King Ashoka built eight stupas (reliquaries) commemorating his eight great deeds in Jambudvipa (the southern continent), and he built a hundred million stupas for the Buddha's relics. More than a hundred years after the Buddha's Nirvana, in the city called Flower Blossom, located ten yojanas (an ancient Indian unit of distance) east of Vajrasana (the Diamond Throne, Bodh Gaya) on the banks of the Ganga (Ganges River), there arose a king named Ashoka. He had seventeen elder brothers. The brothers wondered who would rule the kingdom, so they consulted a Brahmin. The Brahmin said, 'Among these, whoever eats the best food, wears the finest clothes, and sits on the best seat will become king.' One of the ministers secretly inquired, and the answer was, 'The best seat is the earth, the best clothes are cloth, and the best food is rice.' The seventeen brothers enjoyed even better food and clothes, but Ashoka, being the son of a maidservant, also enjoyed the same, so they knew the prophecy was being fulfilled. Later, the seventeen brothers went to other lands as military officers. When their father, the king, died, Ashoka became king and sent troops to kill the seventeen brothers. He committed various sins and ruled a kingdom where the subjects suffered the pains of the three lower realms, so he was known as Ashoka the Cruel. At that time, in the eastern part of India, in the Aranya (hermitage) of the Crow, there was an Arhat (liberated being) named Yashasvanta (Glorious Banner), who was a disciple of Ananda (Buddha's attendant). A Bhiksu (monk) from the east, who had taken vows and become a monk, came to Ashoka and requested, 'I have never killed anyone like this, please kill him.' When the executioner prepared to kill him, he said, 'Please allow me to meditate for seven days.' He meditated and attained Arhatship. Then, he was boiled in sesame oil and killed, but his essence did not die and continued to shine. The king was amazed and asked the reason, and he explained as before. The king prayed, 'Please purify my sins.' He said, 'I do not know, please ask my teacher.' Then, he displayed miracles and passed into Nirvana. Even now, there is a stupa built over his relics in that place. The king requested to visit his teacher, but the teacher feared it would harm many places, so the Arhat himself came to the king and said, 'You have been prophesied to become a Chakravartin (universal monarch) through the power of the Buddha, so build stupas for the Buddha's relics.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was said, 'Ten million stupas must be built.' So, in the Grove of Light in Rajagriha (Royal City), from the domain of King Ajatasatru (Unborn Enemy), a treasure of one 'khal' (load) of the large Magadha 'bre' (measure) was unearthed, but a wheel of weapons appeared and could not be removed. A woman said, 'It is said to pour this into the Ganges River.' So, it was sought and cut, and the wheel was broken. When digging there, a jewel letter appeared, saying, 'A poor king will find it.' The king was arrogant and unwilling to search, but urged by Arhats (Worthy Ones) and others, he searched and found it in a jewel box. On each of the four sides of the box, there were jewel lamps, each equivalent to all the king's state affairs, and the king's arrogance was diminished. Then four large Magadha 'bre' were invited, only one 'khal' of small 'bre'. The remainder was buried as before, and the Ganges River was released, causing the wheel to turn. Even now, there is a stupa there, four 'dom' (arm spans) high, made of brick, very beautiful, where offerings are continuous. Then, in front of the Bodhi tree, the king built a Gandhola, thirty-five 'dom' high, on the image of the Thubpa (Sage), shaped like an upright vajra (diamond scepter), with square steps tapering upwards, made of brick, decorated with various jewels, with particularly excellent craftsmanship, having seven stories with a wheel on top, inside which resided one 'bre' of the Buddha's relics, and on top of that was a golden pinnacle one 'dom' high. In the lowest story, there was an image of the Buddha made of sandalwood snake-heart wood, made by Vishvakarman (All-Creating), with a lion-mouthed face only one 'khru' (span) long. At the four corners of its gatehouse, there were four Gandholas. The top floor had three doors, the innermost having no door. To the right and left of the middle door were Maitreya (Loving One) and Avalokiteshvara (The Lord Who Looks Down). Behind the outer door, there were two images of the Buddha, with faces more than a finger's breadth high, facing south and north, and it is said that Jo-bo Shakya (Lord Shakya) used to be there. Then, in the area with shoulders, there were eight stone images, as well as Tara (Savioress), Manjushri (Gentle Glory), Maitreya, and many images of the Buddha on the right and left. In the corner on the south side of the courtyard, in the temple where Ashoka (Without Sorrow), as a child, offered sand to the Buddha and was prophesied, there was an image of the Buddha holding a begging bowl, making the gesture of pressing the earth. To the west was the Mara-conquering Bodhi tree. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
