《Lipe Rogyi Teachings Collection》RR3 《Diamond Seat Commentary - Flower of Ornament》 Diamond Seat Commentary - Flower of Ornament Diamond Seat Commentary, Chapter One 《Diamond Seat Commentary - Flower of Ornament》 In Sanskrit: Vajra Apana Videsha Alankara Pushpa Nama. In Tibetan: Diamond Seat Commentary - Flower of Ornament. I prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions and three times! I prostrate to the thousand perfect and complete Buddhas who have perfected their deeds in this fortunate kalpa! I shall explain the Diamond Seat, where they attain perfect enlightenment. This place is the source of all Buddhas, therefore it is fitting for scholars to explain it. So, how to explain this place? The Diamond Seat and the Buddha, And their deeds, the Brahmin's son, How these three acted, And how Ashoka acted. After that, Nagarjuna and others, These five actions should be known. The so-called Diamond Seat, Is a place in the shape of a diamond, Indestructible by oneself and others, Arising from the blessings of the Buddhas. Reaching the great golden earth, made of various jewels. At the center where diamonds intersect, The Bodhi tree grows. The Hearers believe that at the four diamond peaks, there are four Diamond Dagger Stupas. The Mahayanists believe that the Bodhi tree arises from the hollow of the five-peaked diamond, with four Diamond Dagger Stupas at the four corners. Here, there are vase-shaped stupas without bases, with vase supports, three spans high, marked with Dharma wheel diamonds, with a medium arrow-length distance between the four stupas. This is the extent of the Diamond Seat. This place is located in the center of Jambudvipa, all Buddhas attain enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and it cannot be destroyed even by fire kalpas, both agree on this point. Diamond Seat Commentary, End of Chapter One. The Deeds of the Buddha, Chapter Two Now, I will explain how the Buddha acted there: The Able One (Shakyamuni Buddha) came from Kapilavastu, renounced in a pure place, practiced asceticism for six years on the banks of the Nairanjana River, and then came to the Diamond Seat. The Bodhisattva (Shakyamuni Buddha) renounced from the city of Kapilavastu at the age of twenty-nine, at the Renunciation Stupa... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, he went to the presence of the pure one (referring to a holy person at the time), became a monk, and practiced austerities by the Nairañjanā River (an Indian river). That river flows from south to north, and in summer it touches the vajra steps of Vajrāsana (the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment), flowing from the east. After that, a craftsman who was an emanation of a god carved a Buddha statue out of stone, clearly showing all the details of the veins, spine, etc., emaciated, facing west, about the length of an average person's hand. There is also an image of a cowherd inserting a wooden stick into his ear, which is said not to be an emanation, so no one knows. There is also a stupa commemorating the horse post of the horses of the five hundred attendants sent by King Śuddhodana (father of Shakyamuni). After that, urged by those messengers, he arose from his ascetic practice and went to a cemetery about half a krośa (an ancient Indian unit of length) southwest of Vajrāsana. There, there is a stupa at the place where people took shrouds from corpses and dyed them. About half a krośa east of there, there is a place where robes are washed, and there is a large stupa called Kanta Atisha. Near there, there is a whetstone where the Bodhisattva (referring to Shakyamuni) sharpened his knife and needle, about two cubits (hasta, an ancient Indian unit of length) long and three cubits wide, which is still worshiped today. After that, he went north, and in a place on the south side of Vajrāsana, there is a lake where he bathed and shaved his head, and there are stone steps and a stupa there. All the broken branches of the Bodhi tree (the tree under which Shakyamuni attained enlightenment), the broken branches of other trees, and old flowers are discarded there. Everyone bathes there, and it is said that those who discard their hair and nails there will not be reborn in the lower realms. To the west of that lake, he met the village girl Lakṣmī, and where she cooked milk porridge, there is a row of six stupas. After that, he accepted the offering of milk porridge, and inside the iron fence of Vajrāsana, there is a two-cubit-high stone pillar called Kera Atisha, with a Bodhi tree and a span-long Buddha image carved on it, and five small stupas are enshrined on top, which is very powerful. There, the temple manager shaves his head. After that, he drank the milk, and on the bank of the Nairañjanā River east of Vajrāsana, there is a stupa where he drank the milk, and he threw the bowl into the water, saying, 'If I can become a Buddha, may it go upstream; if not, may it go downstream.' The bowl went upstream for one yojana, and about an arrow's distance above the place where he threw the bowl, a god took the bowl, and at the place where he threw the bowl and the place where the bowl went upstream, there is a stone stupa, each slightly more than one cubit high. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
