The two are similarly connected and stated as having the characteristic of reason and the dharma to be proven. 'Proximity' refers to proving the meaning to be proven with three parts, and similarly, for the remaining dharma of the same kind, speaking in agreement because the reasoning is the same, in the manner of combining the dharma of the established meaning, such as, 'Because there is smoke in some places, there is also the appearance of firewood burning like fire.' 'Conclusion' is stating definitively that because it is so reasonable in this way, therefore this is also so. If we exemplify the five parts such as the proposition, 'Sound is impermanent' is the proposition. 'Because it is produced' is the reason. 'Like a pot' is the example. 'By this reasoning, self and mine, etc., are also non-existent' is the proximity. 'Because it is so, therefore sound is impermanent and selfless, etc.' is the conclusion. Direct perception is when its own object, such as form, exists as a substance, appears directly, and is without error. Among these, mentioning 'exists' is to eliminate the well-known substances in the world, such as pots, which are not direct perception. Mentioning 'appears' is to eliminate objects that have become invisible due to obscurations and other causes of non-perception. Mentioning 'without error' is to eliminate whirling firebrands, illusions, mirages, and so forth. Inference is the remainder of direct perception, which is to have confidence in a hidden meaning through the gateway of a sign. Reliable scripture is that which shows that the meaning of what is cited does not contradict both direct perception and inference. As it says in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: 'In places seen and unseen, established by reason and by one's own words, whatever scripture is harmless, should be upheld, therefore follow the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds.' Fourth, the adornment of speech is when the speaker's words are very beautiful because of what they possess. That is, thoroughly understanding the words and meanings of one's own and others' treatises, and having perfect and rich wording, prevents the faults of speech that will appear below, because there is no idle chatter, etc. Fearlessness is having no hesitation or reservation in speaking in an assembly of many who are known as wise and virtuous.

Steadfastness is to remain at the ultimate completion of the opponent's words and speak with a calm mind. Concordance is to be in harmony with the minds of the impartial and the opponents due to good nature. Fifth, cutting off by interrupting speech means that punishment is inflicted on the speaker in some way, such as cutting off the continuation of speech. Among these, cutting off the continuation of speech means admitting one's own fault in speech by saying "Mine is not good," and admitting the meaning of another's speech by saying "Yours is good." Unfinished speech refers to being delayed because the occasion of debate has not ended and speech passes from one thing to another, and so on. Faults of speech are words such as idle chatter. Confusion is being distracted by joy or anger. Not being able to understand means that the Dharma and meaning, the audience, and the opponents cannot grasp it. Inappropriate means being excessive, repetitive, or insufficient. Not having meaning means lacking necessary meaning, being separated from the meaning to be expressed, being separated from reason, and the proof being the same as what is to be proven, requiring proof again, and being improper, and not being suitable to be brought up in an assembly, and having hidden defects. Speaking at the wrong time means saying what should be said later first, and saying what should be said earlier later, regardless of how it should be said. Instability means abandoning after making a vow, and making a vow again after abandoning, and so on, and becoming too hasty and very impatient, and so on. Unclear means contradicting grammatical rules, and answering before the opponent has finished stating the refutation, and starting with Sanskrit and ending with one's own language, and so on. Disconnected speech means that speech and confidence are interrupted in the middle, and continuity is interrupted. Sixth, what must be avoided from speaking is not speaking after examining the advantages and disadvantages of speaking. Among these, the opponent not being a vessel means not being able to bring it up from the place of fault and place it in the place of merit. The audience not having merit means not understanding the distinction between the meaning of words, and being unjust, and so on. One must also recognize that one is not proficient in one's own and others' tenets, and so on, and not speak. One should speak in the opposite way from these three. Seventh, regarding the qualities that are cherished in speaking, there are two divisions, of which the actual is undoubtedly for all speakers
