One is born with eyes intact but deaf. The second is born with ears intact but blind. The third is born with both eyes and ears intact. The fourth is other than these conditions. "Thus it is" means, for example, if asked, "Are all impermanent things compounded? Are all compounded things impermanent?" one should answer, "Thus it is." Abandoning means, for example, if asked, "Which truth encompasses the compounded things other than the aggregates?" one should answer, "There is no such thing," and thus abandon it. Fourth, correct questioning has two aspects of ascertainment. The ascertainment of questioning with the eightfold division of sounds and their distinctions is "what," etc. Who does not observe the agent? The answer is the bodhisattva who has attained the perfection of wisdom. What does he not observe? The answer is the characteristics of the apprehended and the apprehender. By what does he not observe? The answer is by the perfection of wisdom. Why does he not observe? The answer is to completely liberate all sentient beings and to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. From what does he not observe? The answer is from pleasing the Buddhas, listening to the sacred Dharma, properly applying the mind, and practicing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma. What does he not observe? The answer is all phenomena. Where does he not observe? The answer is from the stage of faith to the tenth stage. How many kinds does he not observe? The answer is arising and ceasing, unarisen and manifested, arising from the power of causes, arising from the power of friends, not observing all phenomena, not observing emptiness, and with and without the pride of "I am," not accumulating and accumulating collections. These non-observations are, in order, the aspects of past, future, present, internal, external, coarse, subtle, bad, good, distant, and near.
