One dharma is asked one by one with the remaining dharmas, and then it is discarded, and then the second one is asked together with the remaining ones. For example, if asked: Does one who possesses the eye-sphere also possess the form-sphere? It should be combined with the previous sentence. If asked: Does one who possesses the eye-sphere also possess the ear-sphere? It is a fourfold proposition. Similarly, for the dharmas in between, they should be combined appropriately. Similarly, for the ear and so on, each one should be combined with the remaining spheres and examined. Combining with the previous sentence means that when asking based on some pairs of dharmas, the answer is given based on the previous dharma. For example, if asked: Whatever is consciousness, is it also the object of consciousness? It should be combined with the previous sentence, whatever is consciousness is also the object of consciousness. There are objects of consciousness that are not consciousness, namely, the others. Combining with the subsequent sentence means that when asking in pairs, the answer is given based on what. For example, if asked: Whatever is the grasped, is it also the grasper? It should be combined with the subsequent sentence, whatever is the grasper is also the grasped. There are grasped that are not graspers, namely, the five objects such as form, and the dharma-sphere that corresponds to them, except for these. The twofold proposition means that in what place the twofold proposition is shown, because there is no other kind besides that. For example, speaking based on the establishment of aggregates or the establishment of elements. If asked: What is the number of aggregates, is the number of elements also the same? It is a twofold proposition, there is the number of aggregates, but not the number of elements, namely, the form aggregate and the consciousness aggregate. There is the number of elements, but not the number of aggregates, namely, the dharma-element. The threefold proposition means that in what place only the threefold proposition is shown. For example, if asked: What is the number of aggregates, is the number of spheres also the same? It is a threefold proposition, there is the number of aggregates, but not the number of spheres, namely, the form aggregate. There is the number of spheres, but not the number of aggregates, namely, the dharma-sphere. Both are, namely, the consciousness aggregate and the mind-sphere. The fourfold proposition means that in what place the fourfold proposition is shown. For example, if asked: Does one who possesses the eye also possess the ear? It is a fourfold proposition, the first is
