It is in order to enter into true nirvana step by step, and for the sake of true realization. Is it certain that in all cases, one who enters the final stage of the path of seeing will attain the fruit of stream-entry? It is not so. For example, abandoning one or two types of desire realm afflictions is called partially detached from desire; abandoning three is called detached from desire in one direction; abandoning six is called mostly detached from desire; and after abandoning nine, one obtains the name of being detached from desire from the desire realm. Among them, those who have previously abandoned the fifth or fewer of the desire realm afflictions, but have not abandoned the sixth, etc., and therefore are not detached from desire in the desire realm, will enter the stream after entering certainty in the sixteenth moment. One who has abandoned the sixth and is mostly detached from desire will later enter certainty and become a once-returner in the sixteenth moment. Calling this a "once-returner" with prior detachment from desire is the ignorance of those who are not skilled in the terminology of detachment. For as long as the ninth of the desire realm afflictions has not been abandoned, the name of detachment from desire will not be applied. Therefore, this should be called a transgressive "once-returner," because it is a "once-returner" without the fruit of stream-entry having preceded it. Those who have abandoned the ninth and are detached from desire from the desire realm will enter certainty and abide in the fruit of non-return in the sixteenth moment. This is both a "non-returner" with prior detachment and a transgressive "non-returner," because it is a "non-returner" without the non-return having preceded it. Although a stream-enterer abandons all that is to be abandoned by seeing, the sutras say that one enters the stream by abandoning the three fetters, because these three are obstacles to attaining liberation and are the main objects to be abandoned by a stream-enterer. Why? Because by the view of the aggregates as a real self, one manifestly clings to the five aggregates as self and what belongs to self, and thus delights in samsara, and therefore cannot escape suffering. Even if one escapes, by holding ethical conduct and asceticism as supreme, one manifestly clings to the wrong path, and doubt necessarily arises from wrong views; with doubt, one hesitates about the good path, and therefore it is not a cause of true liberation.

Furthermore, the view of the perishable aggregate is the cause of wrongly grasping knowable objects, because it clings to suffering alone as self and what belongs to self. Holding to precepts and vows is the cause of wrongly grasping views, because it believes that it can purify through them. Doubt is the cause of wrongly grasping antidotes, because it is uncertain about the Three Jewels. Secondly, of the two aspects of entering and abiding in the state of once-returner, the entering is: at the end of the path of seeing, on the path of cultivation, the individual who has abandoned the fifth affliction of the desire realm and is abiding on the path of application and the path of uninterruptedness of abandoning the sixth. Why is it that only abiding on the path of abandoning the sixth is entering the state of once-returner? Because whatever aspect of affliction is abandoned, it manifests the fruit of once-returner, and only by engaging in abandoning it is it called entering the fruit of once-returner, and this is only reasonable for abandoning the sixth. Similarly, it should be understood for the third and fourth as well. The Kashmiris say, "Because of the distinction between obtaining the fruit and the fruit, there is no obtaining the path, therefore, to distinguish the fruit position, non-diligence is not entering." This means that when one is diligent on the path in order to obtain a later, more distinguished fruit, then one is entering the later fruit. Here, it is not merely entering the later fruit, because at those times, it is possible to enter another vehicle due to the power of conditions, and thus not manifest the later fruit. Whatever aspect of affliction, when abandoned, will manifest that fruit, when one engages in abandoning that aspect, one will undoubtedly manifest the later fruit, therefore, it is reasonable to say that at that time, one is entering the later fruit. Abiding in the fruit of once-returner is: from the liberation path of the one who has entered, having abandoned the sixth affliction of the desire realm, up to abiding on the path of uninterruptedness of the ninth. Because most are separated from desire, they abide in the fruit of the ascetic practice distinguished in an excellent way. Thirdly, of the two aspects of entering and abiding in the state of non-returner, the entering is: the once-returner who has abandoned the seventh and eighth afflictions of the desire realm, and is abiding on the path of application and the path of uninterruptedness of abandoning the ninth.
