I say that "follower of the Dharma" is established on the path of seeing. Why are dull and sharp faculties not called followers of faith and followers of Dharma in the sixteenth moment? Because at that time, they do not rely on following people and following Dharma, but rely on their own power of direct realization to be skilled in cultivating the path. In the fifth chapter, the excellent distinction of fruit, what is the nature of the fruit? What is the aspect? Relying on what ground? In what realm is it obtained? Here, the fruit mentioned refers to the fruit of the principle of a renunciate, because that itself is the most excellent of fruits. Among them, the principle of a renunciate is that which is contained by the path of no outflow and the path of no interval, and becomes a true renunciate by pacifying the afflictions that are the cause of immoral precepts. As it is said in the sutras, from the beginning of sinful and unwholesome dharmas, up to the extensive description of old age and death, there are many aspects, therefore it is called a renunciate. The fruit of the principle of a renunciate is of two types: conditioned and unconditioned. The former is contained by the path of liberation, and the latter is contained by the cessation of each distinction of the part of abandonment. They are, in order, the homogeneous cause and the masculine fruit of the principle of a renunciate. They are the four fruits of the principle of a renunciate, such as the fruit of stream-entry, etc., mentioned in the sutras from the temporary difference. Other theorists say: The principle of a renunciate is the stainless path, and the fruit is conditioned and unconditioned. Each of them has one hundred and nineteen kinds. Together with the path of liberation and the path of exhaustion. That is, each of the conditioned and unconditioned has one hundred and nineteen kinds. Thus, the path of liberation contained by the path of seeing has eight kinds, and the path of liberation contained by the path of cultivation has eighty-one kinds, these are conditioned dharmas. The abandonment of those afflictions is the unconditioned fruit of the principle of a renunciate, so there are eighty-nine kinds. If so, why establish four fruits? The establishment of four fruits is because there are five causes. For the fruit, it is the previous path that has been abandoned, and the attainment of others and the extinction of

As it is said, "Subduing, obtaining the eightfold wisdom, and obtaining the sixteen aspects," in whatever situation the five causes exist, that itself is regarded as the fruit. Therefore, the path of entering first, obtaining the path of the fruit, obtaining the attainment of all abandonment, simultaneously obtaining the eightfold mindfulness of the Dharma, and obtaining the sixteen aspects such as impermanence. So they say. This can be explained in another way, that is, there are three things to be abandoned: the three universal bonds that become obstacles to entering liberation, the five lower fetters that become obstacles to transcending the lower realms and the lower sphere, and the five higher fetters that become obstacles to transcending the upper realms. These are, in order, the coarse, subtle, and extremely subtle things to be abandoned by those who desire liberation. Abandoning these is also the small, medium, and large fruit that is actually sought. Among them, the first to be abandoned is the fruit of stream-entry, as it is said in the sutra: This person has abandoned the three universal bonds and is a stream-enterer. Secondly, what is weakened and abandoned are the fruits of once-returner and non-returner, as it is said in the sutra: What is the fruit of once-returner? That is, having abandoned the three universal bonds, and having weakened desire, hatred, and ignorance. What is the fruit of non-returner? That is, having abandoned the five lower fetters. Why is it said so? Because the afflictions to be abandoned through the practice of meditation are very coarse and are gradually abandoned, therefore, when the afflictions of the desire realm are almost exhausted, it is regarded as the fruit of once-returner, and when they are completely exhausted, it is regarded as the fruit of non-returner, this is to show the faults of the desire realm, and to show the quick transcendence of it. Thirdly, what is abandoned is the fruit of Arhat, as it is said in the sutra: Having abandoned the five higher fetters is the fruit of Arhat. On what ground is it obtained? The first and second fruits are obtained by not being able to rely on the proximity of the first dhyana.
