The so-called "between" is merely a name, because it has no self-nature of expression other than expression itself. In particular, as an antidote to conceptualization, it is described as "by nature unborn and unceasing, not entirely defiled, nor entirely purified," because it prevents the characteristics of distinctions such as birth. To counteract the conceptualization of meaning as being the same as name, because for false names, after examining those dharmas separately, names are applied following the adventitious name. As names are applied in such and such a way, attachment manifests in such and such a way, because if it does not appear in meaning as it does in name, there will be no attachment to meaning. To counteract the conceptualization of name as being the same as meaning, Bodhisattvas do not truly follow all those names, and because they do not truly follow, there is no manifest attachment. Because if it does not appear in name as it does in meaning, there will be no manifest attachment to name. For the wise who do not conceptualize, the non-conceptualization that is content with this is that of ordinary beings, because they determine "this is such and such" for some dharmas such as impermanence, and having obtained complete satisfaction, they cut off all conceptualizations of higher levels. Non-inverted non-conceptualization is that of the Hearers, because in order to counteract the inversions of permanence, etc., towards the aggregates, they regard form, etc., as merely dharmas, and realize selflessness through transcendental wisdom. Non-elaborate non-conceptualization is that of the Bodhisattvas, because they recognize that form, etc., are merely dharmas, and that they are also elaborations, thereby destroying the characteristics of all dharmas, and through transcendental wisdom, they focus on Suchness in the most peaceful way. Why is it called non-elaborate non-conceptualization? Because it cannot be shown through affirmation, just as describing form to a blind person, so it is shown through negation. If it is not non-conceptualization because there is no attention, then in states such as sleep and drunkenness, there would also be the fault of becoming non-conceptualization because there is no attention to the characteristics of dharmas.

Transformation. It is not so because reality transcends deliberation. If it were so, then all the second dhyana and so on would become non-conceptual. It is not so because the activity of mind and mental factors is completely pacified. If it were so, then the cessation of perception and feeling would also become so. It is not so because of the nature of non-conceptuality. If it were so, then form and so on would also become so. It is not so because of manifest attention to the object. If it were so, then that which has conceptuality would also become so. Therefore, do not regard non-conceptuality as those aspects, but rather regard the object of true wisdom, suchness, as without manifest attention and without grasping at appearances. As it is said in the Summary of the Great Vehicle, "The nature of non-conceptuality, the five aspects are all abandoned, and there is no grasping at appearances in the true meaning." That is how it is said. If Bodhisattvas are naturally sharp-witted, then how should the senses be tamed? Answer: Relying on small, sharp faculties, etc., by manifestly accomplishing from higher to higher in three ways, such as dullness of one's own lineage, one should know that it is to be tamed. The "Determination" obtained from the extensive commentary on the Abhidharma-samuccaya, the Ocean of Good Explanations, is the explanation of the fourth chapter of the Abhidharma-samuccaya.
