The attention that possesses is that by which the three great categories of afflictions of the lower realms such as desire are abandoned, and because of being separated from the bad abodes of that side. Gathering joy is that the yogi then becomes happy to abandon below that, and seeing abandonment as beneficial, touching the small joy and happiness devoid of the three great afflictions, constantly attending to the object that has become joyful from time to time, in order to be separated from dullness and sleep, etc., is the attention of joy. The attention of examination is that, thus well entered, it is shown by joining with the virtuous side, the afflictions of the lower realms such as desire do not arise completely entangled, in order to understand whether that has been abandoned or not, attending to the characteristics of suffering that arise and are in accordance with that, and individually discriminating. The attention of the limit of application is that, having examined it in that way, if one knows that a little has not been abandoned, in order to be separated from all afflictions, one attends to the antidote that abandons the three small categories of afflictions. The attention of the fruit of the limit of application is that, below that, one obtains the actual mind of the first dhyana, etc. Among these, the characteristic of fully knowing is that, having well and completely known what is to be abandoned and what is to be attained, one places the mind on what is to be abandoned and what is to be attained. What arises from aspiration then initiates true application below that. What arises from complete isolation abandons the three great categories of all afflictions. What gathers joy abandons the three medium categories of afflictions. What examines places the mind without the pride of apparent attainment. What is the limit of application completely abandons the three small categories of afflictions. The fruit of the limit of application is that, by well cultivating attention, one experiences the fruit of the cultivation of those things. In equipoise, the measure of the cause of absorption is the difference between the object and the aspect being unclear, clear, and very clear, or the difference between cultivating with reverence and constant application, both not possessed, possessing either one, and possessing both, there are three types of cultivation: small, medium, and large.

Thus it is. The measure of the arising of results is that by meditating on the first dhyana, small and so forth, in three ways, the results of those will sequentially manifest and accomplish the three abodes of the first dhyana, such as the Brahma hosts. Similarly, for the remaining dhyanas as well, by meditating on small and so forth, three by three, at the time of entering into equipoise, one should know that the three abodes of the dhyana's results are accomplished, three by three. The formless ones are because there is no other immeasurable mansion abode. Thus, although there is no establishment of different distinctions of birth, nevertheless, there, by meditating on small, one is born in a bad and low place, and by meditating on medium, one is born in a bad and high place, or a good and low place, and by meditating on great, one is born in a high and good place. Among these, high and low refer to long and short life, and so forth. Bad and good refer to much affliction and the opposite of that. Naming is through the means of accomplishing the distinction of the power of samadhi, which is encompassed by the first dhyana and so forth, for those Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who have obtained mastery over the countless names that have been established, even the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not know those names, so what need is there to mention knowing the number or being able to enter into equipoise? The reason for this is the difference between the presence or absence of the perfection of dhyana. Completely pure refers to the first dhyana and so forth, from one's own small to medium, and then from that to the great extreme, which is called completely pure, in order to manifestly accomplish special qualities such as clairvoyance, and in order to lead to the supreme state of being able to be used as desired. Secondly, the path beyond the world is that in the stage of the path of cultivation, realizing the suchness of the four truths, such as suffering, the four that are in accordance with the aspect of the knowledge of the Dharma, and the four that are in accordance with the aspect of the knowledge of subsequent realization, which is the wisdom that correctly realizes that very thing, are in total eight aspects that are in accordance with the aspect of vipashyana. The aspect of shamatha is from the proximity of the first dhyana that is inseparably possessed of those same qualities, up to the sphere of nothingness. In short, the six dhyanas, together with the first three formless absorptions, are able to generate the nature of being without outflows, shamatha.
