What is the difference between the second dhyana? Due to the difference between being inseparable from and separated from attachment to investigation and analysis, there is a difference between the samadhi not being completely perfected and being perfected. What is the difference between the second and third dhyanas? Due to the difference between being inseparable from and separated from attachment to joy, there is a difference between the benefit not being completely perfected and being perfected. What is the difference between the third and fourth dhyanas? Due to the difference between not being liberated from and being liberated from all the faults of dhyana, there is a difference between complete purity not being perfected and being perfected. Why is the first dhyana called having joy and happiness born of solitude? Because its joy and happiness are born from merely being separated from the attachment to desire and harmful actions, etc., which are sinful and unwholesome. Why is the second dhyana called having joy and happiness born of samadhi? Because its joy and happiness are born from being separated from investigation and analysis, and the samadhi being completely perfected. What is the nature of the joy and happiness of the first two dhyanas? To this, the Vaibhashikas say: Joy is the calming of the feeling of the mind-consciousness wheel, and happiness is extreme pliancy itself. They say this. Some Sutrantikas say that joy is the same as before, but happiness is the calming of the feeling of the sense-consciousness wheel, because the sutra says that happiness is experienced by the body, and extreme pliancy should not be happiness, because the fourth dhyana is the most excellent extreme pliancy, but happiness is not mentioned as a limb. They say this. Here, the calming of the feeling of the mind-consciousness wheel itself, because it benefits the mind-consciousness wheel and its retinue, is called joy, and because it is in accordance with samadhi, it turns inward, and because it benefits the body with its senses, it is called happiness, but these two are not different in substance. In the third dhyana, the calming of the feeling of the mind-consciousness wheel itself, because it is completely grasped by mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, does not perform the action of mental agitation, therefore it is not called joy, but looking inward, because it benefits the body with its senses, it is called happiness. Why is it definite that there are four dhyanas and not more?
