When I think in my mind, "I have nothing at all," that (state) manifests. The birth place of neither perception nor non-perception is: perception is disease, boils, and arrows. Non-perception is complete ignorance. Neither perception nor non-perception is supremely peaceful. When one thinks this way in their mind, that (state) manifests, which is one-pointedness of mind with its concomitants. Why are the dhyanas called "surpassing by limbs"? Because all the dhyanas have the aspect of both tranquility and coarseness. Although there is no difference in terms of object and aspect, there is a difference in terms of limbs. Therefore, the dhyanas are called "surpassing by limbs." Why are the formless realms called "surpassing by object"? Because they are all of one taste in abiding in peace, there is no difference in terms of limbs, but the objects and aspects are different and distinct. Therefore, they are called "surpassing by object." Furthermore, for the dhyanas and the first three formless realms, there are three types: afflicted, pure, and unpolluted. In the birthplace of neither perception nor non-perception, there are two types, excluding the unpolluted. For the access concentrations, the first has two types: unpolluted and pure, while the rest have only the pure. Why do afflictions not arise in the access concentrations? Because these are the paths that lead to detachment from desire, and afflictions cannot lead to detachment from desire. Why do the remaining access concentrations not produce the unpolluted? Because one who has not obtained the actual basis of the lower level cannot enter into the access concentration of the higher level. And one who has obtained the access concentration of the higher level will rely on the actual basis of the lower level to practice the path, because it is easier to practice the path of the actual basis of the lower level from the access concentration of the higher level. Among these, the afflicted is the one-pointedness of mind with its concomitants that corresponds to the afflictions of its own level, which are the four dhyanas and so on, where attachment is predominant. The pure is the virtuous one-pointedness of mind with its concomitants that is not tainted by the afflictions of its own level, which are the four: the declining aspect, the abiding aspect, the excelling aspect, and the decisive aspect. Among these, the declin
