The Second Chapter of the Abhidharmakośa: The Determination of Truth. The Second Chapter of the Abhidharmakośa: The Determination of Truth. Having thus extensively explained the nature of the three dharmas, intending to subsequently determine the difficult-to-understand points in detail, it is stated, "What is determination?" This can be understood through four meanings: Thus, the object of practice, the object of manifest realization, the specific determination of the nature of the four truths, is the determination of truth; the practitioner's own nature, the specific determination of the collection of causes for manifest realization, is the determination of dharma; the result of practice is twofold: self-benefit and other-benefit. Among these, self-benefit is the individual who obtains the realized dharma, the manifest realization to be obtained, and the specific determination of the distinctions of the qualities of the obtained result, which is the determination of attainment; other-benefit is related to the dharma of scripture, the aspect of subduing disciples, the manner of explaining sutras and treatises, the aspect of defeating opponents, the manner of arguing for the sake of refutation, the aspect of understanding the meaning of definitive meaning, and the specific determination of the means of explaining profound topics with hidden meanings, which are the determinations of related speech. Among these, intending to explain the determination of truth for the time being, it is stated, "What is the determination of truth?" This can be understood through three aspects: the classification of truth, the individual natures of each, and the characteristics of truth, showing the difference between mundane and supramundane. The first is the four noble truths: Thus, like an unbearable disease, what yogis and others should first know the nature of is the truth of suffering; subsequently, like the cause of disease, what should be diligently abandoned is the truth of origin; subsequently, like being free from disease, what should be realized is the truth of cessation; subsequently, what should be relied upon by striving for their meaning is the truth of the path. Why are these called noble truths? These are the nature of suffering and the arising of suffering, etc., which the noble ones see as they are, but not the childish ones. Therefore, they are called noble truths. Why are they called truths?

If asked, what is "Napa"? Answer: It is truth because it does not contradict the teachings and seeing it makes everything pure. The meaning of being in accordance with the teachings is: these sufferings, etc., as taught in the teachings, if those who follow reason analyze them, they remain the same and cannot change their form, therefore it is called not contradicting the teachings. Therefore, in the "Collection of Determinations," it says: What is the meaning of truth? It is said: The meaning of the characteristic of not contradicting the teachings, the meaning of seeing it becoming the cause of complete purification, is the meaning of truth. This is what is said. Furthermore, in the same scripture, if asked, what is the meaning of the truth of suffering? It is said: It is the meaning of actions arising from afflictions. If asked, what is the meaning of the truth of origin? It is said: It is the meaning of generating the truth of suffering. If asked, what is the meaning of the truth of cessation? It is said: It is the meaning of the pacification of both of them. If asked, what is the meaning of the truth of the path? It is said: It is the meaning of accomplishing those three meanings. Thus, the nature and order of each truth are also explained. As it is said, the order of explanation of the four noble truths is also such that whatever causes suffering is the first. How it causes suffering is the second. After encountering the dark side, whatever causes happiness is the third. How it causes happiness is the fourth. It is like a disease and its cause, the absence of disease, and medicine. Another way is to arrange the order of the truths according to the order in which worldly suffering arises. Just as worldly people first experience any kind of suffering, they contemplate it. Then they contemplate where it comes from. Then they contemplate liberation from it. Then they contemplate the means of liberation from it. This is what is said. Furthermore, in the same scripture, if asked whether these four noble truths are included in the conventional truth or in the ultimate truth? It is said: They are included in the ultimate truth. Why? Just as conventional truth is
