The conforming part of the place means: the pure meditation, during its entry and continuation, produces or conforms to the afflictions of its own or lower realms. The abiding conforming part means: during its entry and continuation, it leads to other pure meditations of itself and the same realm. The superior conforming part means: during its entry and continuation, it leads to the pure meditation of the higher realm. The decisive conforming part means: during its entry and continuation, it leads to the transcendental path. The peak of existence does not have a superior conforming part, because there is no other realm above it. The others (realms) should be understood as having four (conforming parts). The unpolluted is the transcendental path. Second, the meaning of what is to be known: the objects to be known, namely meditation and the formless, these objects to be known should be understood in four ways, such as pervasive afflictions. First, the four roots of obscuration and non-indication are craving, etc., because they cause the minds of meditators to produce the nature of obscuration and non-indication. How does it arise? Greed will cause pervasive affliction for meditators who are heavy on greed, because they will taste the pleasure of highly subdued. Views will cause pervasive affliction for meditators who are heavy on views, because they will rely on meditation to generate discriminating views of the past, etc. Pride will cause pervasive affliction for meditators who are heavy on pride, because when they obtain excellence, their hearts will become arrogant and complacent. Ignorance will cause pervasive affliction for meditators who are heavy on doubt, because they do not realize the truth, and those who desire liberation will doubt whether obtaining meditation is liberation. For this very reason, it is said that these four are the roots of non-indication. Purity refers to pure meditation and the formless, because it is virtuous, it is free from the pervasive entanglement of afflictions in its own realm. Establishment has four types, such as limb establishment. The first limb establishment is that the first dhyana has five limbs, namely, thinking that desire is coarse, the first dhyana is peaceful, having this kind of seeking aspect of awareness and its lower...

Furthermore, the two observations that meticulously differentiate distinctions through the amount of afflictions, the length of life, and so forth, are the limbs of the antidote. This is because they abandon the opposing factors of the first dhyana, such as desire, hatred, harm, and displeasure. The joy and happiness born from being separated from sinful, unwholesome dharmas are the limbs of benefit, because they benefit the body and mind of those in dhyana. One-pointedness of mind is the limb of place, because relying on it, the limbs of antidote and benefit, such as investigation and analysis, can arise. Similarly, in the second dhyana, the extreme clarity within the nature of the three—mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity—is the limb of the antidote. This is because it abandons the opposing factors of the second dhyana, such as investigation and analysis. The joy and happiness born from samadhi are the limbs of benefit. In the third dhyana, the three—mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity—are the limbs of the antidote, because they abandon the opposing factors of the third dhyana, such as joy. Happiness without joy is the limb of benefit. In the fourth dhyana, the complete purity of mindfulness and equanimity are the limbs of the antidote, because they abandon the opposing factors of the fourth dhyana, such as happiness. Equanimity of feeling is the limb of benefit. Why are mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity present in the first dhyana, but not established as limbs of the antidote? Because although mindfulness and so forth are present in the first dhyana, they are overcome by investigation and analysis, and do not function by their own nature. Therefore, they are not mentioned as limbs of the antidote. In the second dhyana, although they function by their own nature, they are suppressed by joy. Therefore, they are not mentioned by their own names, but are mentioned by the name "extreme clarity." In the third dhyana, because one is liberated from the pervasive bondage of joy, mindfulness and so forth are mentioned by their own names. In the fourth dhyana, because one is free from all the faults of dhyana, mindfulness and equanimity are indicated by the term "complete purity." The first dhyana and
