Without anything else, they are beaten and cooked with hands and feet, with iron and various iron implements. It is said. In summary, there are three types of pretas: those with external obstacles to food and drink, those with internal obstacles to food and drink, and those with obstacles in the food and drink themselves. The first is: Certain beings are born in the realm of pretas because they have excessively indulged in miserliness. They are afflicted with hunger and thirst, and their skin and flesh are all dried up, like a tree stump burned by fire. Their faces are covered with hair, and because they are afflicted with hunger and thirst, their faces and mouths are extremely dry, and their tongues are licking, so they run everywhere to springs, lakes, and ponds. However, in those places, there are also beings holding swords and other weapons guarding and blocking them. Those waters also appear as blood and pus, so that they themselves do not want to drink them. Such are the pretas with external obstacles to food and drink. Those with internal obstacles to food and drink are: their mouths are as small as the eye of a needle and burning with flames, or they have tumors, or they have large abdomens. Like this, even if no one else obstructs them, and they themselves have found food and drink, they are unable to eat and drink. Those with obstacles in the food and drink themselves are: there is a preta called the flame garland preta. Everything they eat and drink burns them, so their hunger and thirst never disappear. There are also pretas called filthy pretas. Some of them eat feces and drink urine, and are able to eat or drink anything that is unclean, foul-smelling, and disgusting. Others cut off their own flesh to eat, but are unable to eat or drink anything that is clean and edible. Such are those with obstacles in the food and drink themselves. Therefore, beings born in the human realm will experience such suffering of poverty: the suffering of poverty caused by innate hunger and thirst, poverty in desires, poverty caused by bad food, the suffering of poverty caused by walking, labor, and fatigue, and not adapting to seasonal changes.
