When a foot is placed, it cuts through skin and flesh, etc. When lifted, it grows back again. When approaching the path filled with blades, there is a forest with leaves of swords. When those beings rest in the cool shade there, leaves of swords fall from the trees. Those leaves cut off all the limbs of those beings and cause them to fall. When they fall there, jackals pluck and eat the flesh from their backs. When approaching that forest, there is a grove of iron thorn trees. When those beings go there, they are made to climb up and down. When they climb up, the tips of the thorns face downwards. When they descend, the tips of the thorns face upwards. From that place, their limbs are pierced and split open. There is something there called a crow with an iron beak. It lands on the shoulders or heads of those beings and plucks out and eats their eyeballs. When approaching the iron thorn tree grove, there is a river called the Immeasurable River, filled with boiling water. When those beings fall into it, there are also beings on both sides holding clubs and other things. They do not allow those beings to come out. If they try to come out, they are laid on their backs on the ground, which is burning with great fire everywhere, and are asked, 'Hey! What do these beings want?' They say, 'We do not know or see, but we are hungry and thirsty.' Then their mouths are pried open with iron tongs, and molten copper from an iron cauldron filled with burning fire is poured in. From that place, they will experience suffering for a long time, until their sinful deeds are exhausted. The path filled with blades, the forest with leaves of swords, and the iron thorn trees, if combined into one, become four types of suffering. Beings born in the cold hells will experience such cold suffering. Beings born in the Blister Hell are struck by the great wind there, and their entire bodies are covered with blisters.

As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "The suffering of being fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears in one day here, is not even a small fraction of the suffering of hell, even a little is unbearable."
