Thus, with the aspect of an unbroken continuity, the continuity of future existence will arise. The opposite of these are called not proceeding in order, not being assembled, and unborn. Thus, having shown the nature of the truth of cessation, now is the time to show the general characteristics of the truth of cessation. That should be understood in four ways, namely, the characteristics of cessation, and so on. Among them, it is cessation because it is free from all the afflictions that cause suffering to arise. It is the nature of the suffering of conditioned existence that is not pacified. Because it is free from the aggregates of clinging, it is called peace. Because it is pure from being free from afflictions, and because it is the nature of happiness from being free from suffering, it is called excellent. Because it does not revert and is always happy, it is the basis of benefit, and therefore it is called definite departure. Thus, having shown the truth of cessation to be realized, wanting to explain the truth of the path to be followed, it is said, "What is the truth of the path?" That should also be understood in three ways, namely, briefly explaining it through the door of action, explaining it extensively by dividing it into five, and gathering it with the aspect of general characteristics. The first is that the path by which one knows suffering and the other four truths from the door of their own and general characteristics, and does what is appropriate to each, is a brief summary of the nature of the truth of the path. The second division into two is: the antidote that ripens the continuum, the path of accumulation; the antidote that closely abandons, the path of joining; the antidote that abandons one side, the path of seeing; the antidote that abandons everything, the path of meditation; and the ultimate path that completely perfects abandonment. This distinction should also be understood as referring to the truth of the path and its retinue, because the path of accumulation and the path of joining are the cause, and the ultimate path is the result. Second, in the individual establishments, the first of the five, the path of accumulation, is the morality of the ordinary person, the mind that abandons misconduct, and the means to purify it, namely, guarding the doors of the senses such as the eye. Even though the eye sees forms, it is completely...

Grasping (mindfulness), not generating attachment and anger, etc., towards beautiful or ugly forms. Knowing the measure of food means eating only to maintain the body for digestion and virtuous deeds. In the "Letter to a Friend," it says, "Knowing food as medicine, one should partake without greed or hatred, not for fatness, pride, or beauty, but only for life." As it is said. Again, in the same text, it says, "The wise one, day and night, at all times, does not sleep in the early or late watches of the night, not letting sleep become fruitless, guarding with mindfulness in this way." As it is said. Dividing the night into three parts, not sleeping in the first and last parts, but striving in the yoga of tranquility and insight. In the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life," it says, "It is very important to repeatedly examine the states of body and mind; in short, this is mindfulness, the characteristic of guarding mindfulness." As it is said. Being exceedingly delighted to abide in mindfulness at all times. Furthermore, for the virtuous deeds that become the cause of liberation, confessing sins, rejoicing in virtuous deeds, etc., and abiding without regret, etc. Similarly, for the Buddha's teachings, whether it is the wisdom that arises from hearing, or the wisdom that arises from thinking about its meaning through reasoning, or the wisdom that arises from meditating single-pointedly on the meaning of thought, in short, by meditating on it, the mind-stream will realize the truth, and it will be able to become a vessel for the place of liberation from the obstacles of discordant sides."
