The nature of self-luminousness is considered to be a non-cessation that relies on antidotes to eliminate afflictions. The Madhyamikas believe that dependent origination, from the very beginning, is free from arising and ceasing, and is inexpressible. They merely apply the term "cessation" to it, which is the concise meaning. Secondly, to establish it with scriptural proof, the cessation of the contaminated sources and aggregates is said to be cessation in the scriptures. As it is said in the sutra: "From where does the sea turn back? From where does the path turn back? Where will all the suffering and happiness of the world cease?" In response to the question, it is said: "Where the eye and the ear, likewise the nose and the tongue and the body, the mind and likewise name and form, all cease completely, from there the sea turns back, from there the path turns back." It is said that the "sea" refers to the six internal sources, such as the eye. Through their doors, when consciousness enters the object, afflictions will increase, because they are the abode of the dragon of afflictions. The path refers to the two, karma and afflictions, relying on them, one will proceed in the five realms. All of them will cease in the realm of nirvana without remainder. This is its meaning. Showing that the cessation of the eighteen elements is cessation, as it is said: "Where the eye element ceases, and the eye consciousness and the corresponding feeling of color disappear, up to the cessation of the dharma element, and the consciousness and the corresponding feeling of dharma disappear, that should be considered the abode or support of sentient beings." These two categories of scriptural proof show that it is both Suchness and the object of wisdom, that is, the complete cessation of contaminated things included in the aggregates, elements, and sources, which is the nature of cessation. Secondly, contamination refers to the contaminated actions such as the six sources, their destruction, that is, cessation, is not other than the complete nirvana cessation in the realm of nirvana without remainder. Thus, nirvana is superior because all contaminated dharmas cease.

Because it is not an other. It is also not a non-other, because nirvana cannot completely cut off the nature of the exhaustion of all phenomena. Therefore, it is neither an other nor a non-other, nor is it both an other and a non-other, because of contradiction and the impossibility of other ways. Why is it that it and it are always not there? Because nirvana is without the four extremes of elaboration. Elaboration is improper attention in this context of showing the truth of cessation, that is, the saying that what should be thought is also other, and the thinker is also other. And why is that? Because the truth of cessation or nirvana itself, which is free from the four extremes, is thought of as the four extremes. To establish it with scripture, as the Bhagavan said, the six sense bases of contact, such as the eye, all exhausted, etc., from the point of view of cessation, if nirvana is thought of as being in another place, or not, or both, or neither, then improper attention to nirvana, which is without elaboration, is elaboration. In short, as long as there are six sense bases, although there are no afflictions, there is elaboration because of the arising of feelings of pleasure and pain and the gross conceptions that follow them. When the six sense bases cease, the elaboration that disturbs the continuum, such as feelings and conceptions, will disappear. Therefore, the complete cessation of the six sense bases is shown to be nirvana without remainder. The third is that which is merely the weakening of the seeds of affliction by the worldly path, which is called the cessation of name, because the seeds have not been truly destroyed. Even so, there is the saying that afflictions have been abandoned. Because it is the cessation of name, it is said to be the nirvana of its branch in the classification of worldly meditations. Because worldly meditations can also temporarily liberate from the suffering of the lower realms. Therefore, it is called the nirvana of its branch. That which is abandoned by the wisdom of the noble ones, having completely destroyed the seeds of what is to be abandoned, is the real.
