Therefore, whatever is already ceased is not something to be ceased. Furthermore, cessation through antidotes is not true cessation. Because it has ceased from the very beginning, it is called cessation. Haven't many similar things been said? If so, why can't the naturally luminous mind in an impure state be called the Truth of Cessation? This is because, even in an impure state, the naturally luminous mind has never given rise to the nature of afflictions such as attachment. Therefore, it is said that attachment and the like have ceased from the very beginning. If one argues that cessation exists even in an impure state based solely on this, then we will not dispute the name, nor will we deny that sentient beings have a naturally luminous mind in theirContinuum. However, the cessation that is the nature of not arising afflictions must be accomplished by the path in every way, so it is never present in an impure state. If cessation is not substantially existent, how can it be accomplished by the path? Although the path does not do anything to the nature of cessation itself, the mere fact that the subsequent mind arises with the characteristic of not giving rise to afflictions due to the co-operative condition of the path and the immediately preceding moment of mind as the close cause, is enough to gain the designation that the path has accomplished cessation. For example, just as in the world, it is said that the hammer has destroyed the pot when a state of shards arises from the immediately preceding moment of the pot as the close cause and the co-operative condition of the hammer. Those Particularists (Vaibhashikas) who assert that the Truth of Cessation, which is the cessation attained through individual discrimination, is a separation that is individual and separate, and that it is the nature of a permanent substance, do not assert that the path generates the nature of cessation. However, merely because the path generates the attainment that causes that cessation to be possessed in theContinuum, that permanent substance of separation is designated as the fruit of separation of the path. This is because cessation is attained from the path having separated from afflictions. Also, those who say that the Truth of Cessation has always existed permanently and that the path merely makes it manifest, these statements are only different in name, but in reality, they all consider cessation to be substantially existent.

There is no difference from (other schools') views. The Sautrāntikas believe that the nature of cessation is in accordance with what is said here, that it is a non-affirming negative, but they consider it to be merely a negation that is separate from the object to be negated. Here, however, since the Thusness that is by nature luminosity is accepted as the object to be negated, the difference lies only in that. Why do these schools not accept an object to be negated? Because when one abides in the supramundane path, other defiled entering consciousnesses other than the antidote cease, and because they do not accept the ālaya-vijñāna, and also the antidote itself is not logically the object of negation for abandoning afflictions, because the dwelling place of afflictions does not abide in it. Here, however, the ālaya-vijñāna, which possesses the dwelling place of afflictions, continues to follow even when the path manifests, and therefore it itself becomes the place of the path. Precisely because of this, its reality, which is by nature luminosity, is logically the object of negation for the cessation of afflictions. According to the treatises of the noble Nāgārjuna, the cessation of destroying what is to be abandoned by the antidote is not accepted as either substantially existent or nominally existent. If both the antidote and what is to be abandoned, which are considered as such, are like illusions, without intrinsic nature in their essence, then what is destroyed by what? Therefore, when a yogi fully knows that all phenomena are unborn from the very beginning, then cessation and nirvāṇa are realized, and this is how terms are applied based on worldly conventional truth. As it is said in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: When things are born and perish, How can cessation be conceived? Likewise, the noble ones also assert, Cessation like an illusion. Cessation occurs through destruction, But not through knowing what is conditioned; To whom will that be manifest? What is 'perishing' and what is it like? And so on. Thus, among the four schools of tenets, the Vaibhāṣikas and Sautrāntikas, respectively, believe that (cessation) is an eternally existing substance and a non-affirming negative that merely prevents what is to be abandoned. In this Yogācāra system,
