Because that which is defiled by afflictions is precisely what is purified by the path. Otherwise, it would be unreasonable to say that what is defiled by afflictions is precisely what is purified by the path, since the bases for defilement by attachment, etc., and purification by faith, etc., are different. Such a mind, luminous by nature, is called naturally pure when the predispositions of afflictions such as desire have not been abandoned. When the predispositions of afflictions have been completely destroyed by the path, it gains the name of being purified even from adventitious stains. Therefore, the mind, luminous by nature, is precisely the suchness that serves as the basis for the afflictions to be eliminated by the path. The nature of cessation is that on the object to be eliminated, afflictions will never arise, which is the nature of separation through analysis, a non-affirming negation. That, from the suchness of the object to be eliminated, cannot be spoken of as either the same or different. For example, in an impure state, the emptiness of non-entity and the essence of non-entity, emptiness, are not the same or different. Just as in an impure state, the essence of non-entity, emptiness, is emptiness nominally, not the nature of emptiness, while the emptiness of non-entity is the very nature of emptiness. Similarly, in a state transformed into purity, the suchness of the object to be eliminated is a nominal cessation, not the very nature of cessation, while the separation through analysis, which is the nature of the non-arising of all afflictions, is the very nature of the truth of cessation. Therefore, some say that the truth of cessation is permanent, otherwise it would be newly arising from non-existence. Therefore, the truth of cessation exists even in an impure state, without any difference in nature from a pure state, but it is merely obscured and not seen. Such a statement is unreasonable. In this way, if there exists something definitively established as the truth of cessation, then it is either pre-existing or newly arising later.

This conceptualization of action transforms, because it does not correspond to anything else. The truth of cessation, so-called, is not something else at all, but merely the absence of the imprints of afflictions, the non-arising of the very nature of afflictions, and nothing more, which is a non-affirming negation. To examine whether its own nature has existed from the beginning or arises newly later is to doubt what is not the case, which is the behavior of a fool, like examining the sharpness and dullness of a rabbit's horn. If it is said that a rabbit's horn is completely non-existent, so it is not appropriate to examine its sharpness and dullness, but if the truth of cessation is also completely non-existent, how can it be realized? I have not said that cessation does not exist, but I have said that the nature of cessation as a complete severance is completely non-existent. Therefore, to examine whether the nature of something that is completely non-existent has existed from the beginning or arises later is no different from examining the sharpness and dullness of a rabbit's horn, because it is the same. If that is the case, how is it that cessation is realized? It is that when one directly perceives the luminosity of the mind's nature, which has the characteristic that afflictions will never arise again, one obtains the designation of having realized cessation. For example, when one directly perceives a certain place, one says that one has directly perceived the absence of a pot. If the mind's naturally luminous nature is the truth of cessation, and it has existed from the beginning, I do not say that it has not existed from the beginning. However, in the impure state, it does not even obtain the name of the truth of cessation, because cessation is distinguished by the abandonment of afflictions. When the imprints of afflictions are destroyed, then it obtains the name of the truth of cessation, but because a pure nature arises newly from the immediately preceding cause of its own moment and the co-emergent condition of non-conceptual wisdom, it has not existed from the beginning, and it is a nominal cessation, not a cessation of characteristics, as has already been said before. If, as it says in the Sutra Ornament of Wisdom Light: Manjushri, whatever is called exhaustion is only complete exhaustion. Complete
