Taking vows merely to please others for purposes such as averting fear. Physical deterioration refers to being afflicted with illnesses such as hemorrhoids and eye diseases, which are said to be obstacles. Male deterioration refers to eunuchs and hermaphrodites. Deterioration of virtuous Dharma refers to: committing the five heinous crimes, becoming a non-Buddhist, engaging in thievery, residing in disparate places, and places where one should not reside. Being under the control of others refers to not being permitted by parents, etc. Following others refers to emanation. Among these, the second and fifth interrupt beauty and abiding, but do not interrupt the arising of vows. The others interrupt the arising. If asked, what causes and times prevent one from becoming a lay practitioner? In short, there are two: deterioration of intention and deterioration of masculinity. Among these, deterioration of intention should be understood as meaning that one will definitely not become a practitioner in any way. Deterioration of masculinity means that even if one has taken the vows, one should not be called a lay practitioner, and the causes and conditions will be explained below. It should be said that the upavāsa vows cannot be taken solely due to deterioration of intention. If asked, what causes and times lead to the abandonment of even having taken the vows of a monk? In short, there are five causes: abandoning the basis of training, especially committing the root downfalls, losing sexual function and developing dual sexual characteristics, severing the roots of virtue, and abandoning one's own kind, which also leads to the abandonment of the vows of a monk that have been taken. During the decline of the sacred Dharma, it is impossible to take vows that have not been taken, but it should be understood that those previously taken will not be abandoned. Just as at that time, due to the occurrence of an evil age, even if no sentient beings become fully ordained monks due to deterioration of intention, what need is there to mention the attainment of the fruits of a śrāmaṇa? It should be understood that the lay vows are abandoned due to the arising of unpleasant thoughts, the severing of the roots of virtue, and the abandonment of one's own kind. Just as with the vows of a monk during the decline of the sacred Dharma, the vows of a lay practitioner and upavāsa should be understood in the same way. It should be understood that the upavāsa vows are abandoned due to the arising of unpleasant thoughts, the passing of the night, and the premature abandonment of one's own kind. Ga.

Secondly, examining the individual who is the basis of the vows, it is said, "The monastic vows are established based on what kind of individual?" The meaning is as follows: Why did the Bhagavan establish these three types of vows, namely the vows of a monk (bhikshu), the vows of a lay follower (upasaka), and the vows of a lay practitioner (upavasatha)? It is due to three reasons: Thus, there are disciples who both abstain from misconduct and abstain from desires; there are those who do not abstain from desires but abstain from misconduct; and there are those who neither abstain from misconduct nor abstain from desires. Among them, for the first type of disciple, the vows of a monk are established, because they abstain from misconduct such as killing, and they also abstain from the desire of non-celibate conduct, thus they are superior. For the second type of disciple, the vows of a lay follower are established, because householders dwell in places of harm and affliction, and they cannot fully protect the interconnected parts of the precepts like a string of beads. For the third type of disciple, the vows of a lay practitioner are established, because they do not abstain from both, but merely take vows to abandon the causes of both, thinking, "I am oppressed by a very heavy burden." Its branches are three: The first three are distinguished by abstaining from misconduct. The last four are distinguished by abstaining from desires. One is distinguished by abstaining from both, namely, abandoning non-celibate conduct. When specifically explaining the lay follower, examining the number of precepts from the two aspects, such as taking one or two of the five precepts of a lay follower, such as abstaining from killing, and learning them, does one possess the vows of a lay follower or not? In the 'Great Name Sutra,' it is said, 'Venerable one, by how much does one become a lay follower who abandons one aspect?' The answer to the question is abandoning one aspect, practicing one aspect.
