Therefore, gold and silver are the root and main cause of all accumulations. For laypeople, the fault of accumulation is not so great, and it does not contradict the precepts, so the precept of abstaining from taking gold and silver is not prescribed as a branch of the Upavasatha vow. Why is it that holding dances, songs, the sound of music, incense, garlands, and unguents is made one branch of the Upavasatha vow, while for a novice monk it is made two branches? Because for laypeople, if they violate these, they only need to confess one fault. In order to avoid having to confess twice, these are combined into one precept. However, since these contradict the conduct of the ordained, if they violate these, they need to confess two faults. In order to avoid having to confess only once, the precept is made heavier and prescribed as two branches. What is the classification and collection of these precepts like? Those precepts that are properly taken, if divided in detail, can be known to belong to a hundred categories. That is, abandoning each branch of the ten non-virtuous paths of action, there are ten; abandoning most, there are ten; abandoning all, there are ten; abandoning for a short time, there are ten; abandoning for a long time, there are ten; abandoning for as long as life lasts, there are ten; abandoning oneself, there are ten; causing others to abandon, there are ten; repeatedly speaking of the merits of these, there are ten; and rejoicing and taking delight in seeing others abandon, there are ten. All of these can also be divided into eight types: the precepts that are completely aroused, the precepts that are completely held, the precepts that are completely guarded, the precepts that are abandoned, the small precepts, the medium precepts, the large precepts, and the completely pure precepts. Among these, before taking them correctly, thinking in one's mind that one will correctly take up abandonment, that is the first. When one takes and holds abandonment correctly, that is the second. After that, the mind of abandonment is completely seized by the five powers, and in all circumstances it possesses the seed, and through the way it manifests from time to time, just as it was taken, guarding completely arises, and thereby avoiding encountering evil friends, or practicing evil due to the increase of afflictions.

Avoiding all arising desires, and thinking, 'Things that contradict me and lead to bad destinies, I must not do.' This is the third. If, due to forgetting more than a hundred times, one repeatedly commits sins, then one should quickly, quickly establish mindfulness. Regarding faults as faults, confess them, and take vows again. This is the fourth. Abandoning a part of actions, and abandoning oneself only for a short time, is small. Abandoning mostly, and abandoning for a long time, and also causing others to abandon, is medium. At all times and places, abandoning oneself and also causing others to abandon, and proclaiming these virtues in various names, and seeing things in accordance with the Dharma, arising joy and contentment, is great. Like this, relying on the correctly taken and flawless vows, with contaminated samadhi, the seeds of immoral conduct are damaged by the stillness, and realizing the truth, completely destroying the seeds of immoral conduct, this is the completely pure vows. In short, these eight vows can be summarized into three vows, namely: the vows of correct taking, the vows of complete guarding, and the vows of complete purification. Among them, the first two vows are the vows of correct taking. The vows of complete guarding and the vows of abandoning are the vows of complete guarding. The small, medium, and large vows should be known to belong to the category of these two vows. The vows of correct taking and the vows of complete guarding, completely purified by contaminated and uncontaminated samadhi, are the vows of complete purification, which are the two vows of samadhi and uncontamination. If the causes and conditions are not complete, one cannot take the vows of a bhikshu, and even if one wants to take them, one cannot obtain them. What is the reason? In short, there are six reasons: decline of intention, physical defects, loss of faculties, decline of virtuous qualities, being under the control of others, and following others. Among them, decline of intention means that one does not want to take vows from the bottom of one's heart.
