This Bhikshu vow has four branches, namely: the branch of complete antidote, the branch of correctly taking the precepts of the Dharma that are in accordance with it, the branch of following the minds of others, and the branch of following and protecting the precepts that have been correctly taken. Among them, the prayer and the action of the basis, and how to take the outline of the precepts, is the first branch. After that, in the Pratimoksha of the Vinaya, in accordance with the discipline of the Bhikshu, and contemplating and practicing all the precepts that are in accordance with it, is the second branch. The ritual that possesses these two branches is the complete practice, which is the third branch. Among them, even fearing the slightest fault, not committing sins, and taking the precepts correctly in order to be liberated from sins, and studying, is the fourth branch. The Shramanerika vow, because of many afflictions, in order to gradually become a Bhikshuni, on top of the Shramanerika's objects to be abandoned: one should not walk alone on the road, one should not swim across the river bank, one should not touch a man, one should not sit together with him. One should not hide faults, one should not speak pleasingly, these are the six Dharmas of the Bhikshunis, as is well said. Salisbram is taking, and shaving the hair of the secret place, and digging the lands, and one should not cut the roots of green grass, etc. Taking food without giving, and eating after storing, one should well prevent such things, the conforming Dharma is said to be six. Thus, one should study as it is said in the Garland of Flowers Tantra. The Shramanera's vow: Whoever kills, steals the wealth of others, does not engage in sexual misconduct, lies, and brews alcohol, etc., dancing, garlands, etc., high and large beds, afternoon meals, gold and silver, both should be abandoned, the victor who conquers the enemy of afflictions is the victorious discipline, the Shramanera's discipline is as firm as a dam. Thus, one abandons the ten things to be abandoned. The Shramanerika's vow is that she is born as a woman. These are the vows of ordination, and these are not taken by oneself, but should only be received from others, if so, ordination

If those vows can be taken by oneself, then even those who are not suitable for ordination will become ordained relying on themselves. Because those will make the doctrine unstable, and the holy Dharma and Vinaya will also increase. The lay vows are: The eight lay vows, for as long as life lasts, not killing and stealing, sexual misconduct and false speech, and abstaining from drinking alcohol. Like this, abandoning the five things to be abandoned. The laywoman's vow is: She is born as a woman. The lay vow is also composed of three branches, like this: The branch of correctly taking up the abandonment of things harmful to others, the branch of restoring what has been lost from the correct taking up, and the branch of not losing from the correct taking up. Among them, abandoning harm to others' lives, possessions, and wives is the first branch. Abandoning lying is the second branch. Abandoning alcohol and adulterated alcohol, and mixed alcohol and places of recklessness is the third branch. The upavāsa vow is: In the Suhrllekha it says: "Non-harming and sex, theft and falsehood, attachment to alcohol and untimely food, delight in high beds and song, and abandoning the distinctions of dance and garlands. If one possesses these eight branches, following the asceticism of an arhat, it is called posadha." Like this, abandoning the eight things to be abandoned. This is also composed of five branches, like this: The branch of correctly taking up the abandonment of things harmful to others, the branch of correctly taking up the abandonment of things harmful to oneself and others, the branch of restoring what has been lost from the correct taking up, for the sake of not losing from the correct taking up, the branch of establishing mindfulness, and the branch of not making mindfulness confused. Among them, abandoning harm to others' lives and possessions is the first branch. Abandoning unchastity is the second branch, like this, abandoning it is because one does not rely on one's own wife, so it will not cause harm to oneself, and one does not rely on another's wife, so it will not cause harm to others either. Abandoning lying is the third branch. Except for abandoning alcohol and adulterated alcohol and mixed alcohol and places of recklessness

In addition to that, abandoning the other three places is the fourth branch. Why? It is like this: constantly relying on the sounds of singing, dancing, and music, incense, garlands of flowers, high beds, and untimely food, when one sees oneself in solitude for a moment, one thinks, "I have observed the fast," and therefore constantly abides in mindfulness. Abandoning alcohol and the like is the fifth branch. It is like this: even if one thinks, "I am abiding in mindfulness," that branch, being intoxicated and confused by alcohol, will lead one to act involuntarily. The latter three are vows belonging to the householder's side, and those vows can be taken by oneself or from others. If one has already taken those vows oneself, then why take them from others? These two are the abandonment of sexual misconduct, and are branches of following and protecting the vows after having properly taken them, like knowing shame and having embarrassment. When properly taken from others, even though it is the basis for cutting off all faults, shame arises from relying on others and relying on oneself, therefore one should properly take them from others. When non-diligence does not arise, one properly takes them oneself and solely protects them, for such merit, one should know that its arising is the same and without difference. Why is it that in the vows of the lay devotee, the abandonment of taking gold and silver is prescribed in the vows of a novice monk? This is because a novice monk abides in the direction of renunciation. For a renunciate, there are two places that are very unsuitable and do not conform to the Dharma, like the pleasure of indulging in play that leads to the extreme of begging, and striving to adorn oneself as one pleases, and the enjoyment of hoarding. In order to abandon the first place that does not conform to the Dharma, therefore the abandonment from the sounds of singing, dancing, and music, etc., to untimely food is prescribed. In order to abandon the second place that does not conform to the Dharma, therefore the abandonment of taking gold and silver is prescribed.
