This is also called the Discipline that Pleases the Noble Ones. What is discipline? What is its nature? It is said that discipline is the possessor of the five powers that control the mind of a sentient being who abandons immoral conduct. Believing and desiring the future result of virtuous actions is the power of faith in this. Manifesting joy and having a mind that rejoices in subduing opposing forces is the power of diligence in this. Repeatedly bringing to mind the discipline that has been properly taken is the power of mindfulness in this. The mind-stream is not disturbed by the afflictions that provoke immoral conduct, and abiding in a state of coolness is the power of samadhi in this. Seeing qualities as qualities is the power of wisdom in this. Thus, it possesses the five powers. Do not the mind and other mental factors also perform the action of abandoning immoral conduct? Why is only the mind designated as discipline? It is said that the mind itself is the main thing in the manifestation of the mind in all virtuous and non-virtuous objects. As has been said before, therefore, the mind is also the main thing in the manifestation of the mind in abandoning immoral conduct, and discipline is also well distinguished by abandoning immoral conduct. Others say that discipline is said to be like a dam that prevents the flow of immoral conduct. However, the mind of abandonment does not arise in states of mental distraction and mindlessness, so it is not suitable for discipline because it is different from the nature of a dam. The actions of body and speech, which are not of a nature that can be distinguished, continue to be connected in all times, whether there is mind or no mind, distraction or no distraction, until the cause of abandonment has not arisen. Like a dam, it has the power to prevent the flow of immoral conduct in all ways, so it is discipline. Thus they say. Such a discipline of nature, like form and so on, is not an external object that can be perceived by the senses, nor is it internal like pleasure and so on.

We ourselves have not experienced it through self-cognition, nor can we infer it from its function like the sense of sight, so how can we know of its existence? If you say that even if the basis of immoral conduct is present, it can be inferred from the expressions of body and speech that do not engage in it, that is not correct. For such expressions of body and speech arise either from the power of a mind that renounces immoral conduct, or from the power of the existence of non-manifest form like a dam. This needs to be examined. Even when examined in that way, it is not caused by the power of a continuous non-manifestation, because if it existed at all times, such expressions of body and speech would also occur at all times. If you say that there is no fault because it depends on the presence of the basis of unfavorable external conditions and the manifestation of the mind that renounces it as an internal condition, then these two causes that produce the expressions of body and speech that cause the abandonment of immoral conduct are sufficient. What is the use of examining other non-manifestations? Furthermore, it is not reasonable to consider as its cause something for which one has not seen the ability of what benefits what, just like the seeds of weeds for the sprouts of rice. For the expressions of body and speech that abandon immoral conduct, one has not seen the ability of the non-manifest form of the nature of manifest desire to provide assistance. This is called the non-establishment of pervasion. If you say that if there were no such non-manifestation, the mind of abandonment would not arise, then this also has the same fault as before, and it is not reasonable because there is no valid cognition. Furthermore, just as a dam itself exists without being destroyed and can prevent the flow of a river, if merely existing itself can prevent the continuum of immoral conduct, then because there is no difference in all states of mind being distracted and not distracted, it would be impossible for the mind to be distracted and engage in immoral conduct. For those who accept the hero of the mind of abandonment, it is distraction
