It is only in the actions that generate evil that the terms "virtuous" and "non-virtuous" are used; other than that, there is nothing else. The four ways of projecting are: there is also the case where one body is projected by the ripening of a single moment of completed action, because a single action nourishes the seed of ripening for only one lifetime. One action projects many bodies because it nourishes the seeds of ripening for many lifetimes. Many actions project one body because many moments of action repeatedly nourish the seed of ripening for that one lifetime. Many actions project many bodies because many actions depend on each other, nourishing the seeds that pass from one lifetime to another. These are merely established based on the scriptures and are not established by reasoning. Regarding which projection matures first, how do sentient beings with many actions that produce many different ripenings gradually experience the ripening of the ripened results? Is it reasonable to think that when there are equal causes, the results will occur simultaneously? In that case, the result of whichever action is heavier will mature first, because it is reasonable that a powerful cause will quickly produce a result. If they are equal in weight, then whichever action is awakened and manifested by conditions at the time of death will mature first, because at the time of producing the result, the other is dormant and weak. If at the time of death the mind is not clear and cannot manifest anything, then whichever action is more familiar will mature first, because it is more powerful. If those are also the same, then it should be known that the action that was done first will mature first, because it is reasonable that the result occurs in accordance with the order of the cause. As it is said: Among actions in samsara, whichever is heavier and closer, whichever is habitual, whichever was done first, from those actions, the earlier ones mature earlier. Just as it is said. Regarding the formations of dependent origination, their individual natures are: meritorious actions, etc., whatever arises, of which merit is the virtue of the desire realm, because it produces desirable results, and the virtue of the higher realms is included in the immovable.

Non-meritorious action is non-virtue, because it produces undesirable results. Immovable action is the virtue of the form and formless realms. Just as in the desire realm, some actions of perfecting karma can perfect other beings, so too can virtue perfect other beings. However, in the form and formless realms, actions are not like that, because they produce fixed results, and because they are the ground of equipoise, they are not shaken by the faults of the lower grounds. Even in the desire realm, the maturation of projecting karma never wavers. That which projects the maturation of a good rebirth never projects the maturation of a bad rebirth, because a bad rebirth is not a good rebirth. The maturation of virtuous and non-virtuous actions of perfecting karma occurs in the continuum of both good and bad rebirths without contradiction. Because it is possible to waver to other rebirths, it is not immovable. The way these are produced by ignorance is that, conditioned by ignorance, actions such as meritorious actions arise. As it is said, it is reasonable that non-meritorious action arises from ignorance, but how do meritorious and immovable actions arise from the condition of ignorance? Because they arise from the three roots of virtue. If asked in this way, then the obscuration that manifests action is of two kinds: The first is being obscured about the ripening of the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, not knowing that desirable and undesirable ripenings will arise from them. This manifests non-virtuous action, because the person who possesses this obscuration does not believe in the relationship of cause and effect, and therefore does not possess the correct view, and therefore engages in non-virtue solely for the sake of happiness in this life. The second is being obscured about the true meaning of the noble truths. This manifests meritorious and immovable action, because even though one may possess the correct view, one is still connected to all those who have not seen the truth, and therefore, under that influence, one does not truly know that the three realms are the nature of suffering. Therefore, in order to obtain the happiness of the desire realm in the future, one manifests the action of meritorious action.
