Although destroyed, it will not become what is abandoned by the path of seeing. If sudden afflictions arise from causes such as the teachings of bad spiritual friends, when that which is in accordance with the decisive part arises, has it not already changed? If so, how can it be said that it is to be abandoned by seeing the truth? Because the manifest afflictions that are entangled by these will not arise once they have entered into accordance with the decisive part. But as long as the truth is not realized, the latent tendencies are not abandoned, because those that are in accordance with the decisive part are merely faith and attention to the aspects of the truth. Therefore, they cannot abandon the latent tendencies. When the truth is realized, all the latent tendencies of these are eliminated, because from then on, the mindstream is no longer a vessel for the arising of such aspects of afflictions. Therefore, these are to be abandoned by seeing the truth. There are three types of abandonment: how to abandon the manifest, with what kind of attention to abandon the latent tendencies, and which afflictions to be abandoned, whether seeds or manifest. The first has three: first, to fully understand the nature of the three aspects of the cause, effect, and essence of afflictions; in the middle, to completely abandon the afflictions that have arisen in the mindstream; and finally, to find the antidote to those that have not arisen. Among these, complete understanding means fully understanding the basis of the affliction, the cause and object from which it arises, and the immediately preceding conditions; fully understanding the nature of the affliction itself, the characteristic of the mind not being pacified; fully understanding the faults of the affliction, which harm oneself, others, and both, these are the results of the agent. Causing transgressions in this life is the result of dominance. Bringing about the suffering result in the future is the result of maturation, these are to be fully understood. Complete abandonment means that, having fully understood the nature of the three aspects of cause, effect, and essence in this way, one abandons the manifest afflictions that have arisen in the mindstream by not accepting them. Not accepting means not letting go at will or accidentally, but regarding them as incompatible and as faults.

It is the view. Obtaining the antidote is to obtain and cultivate the path of ugliness and so on in order to abandon the unarisen afflictions. How does one abandon them through mental engagement? There are two types of mental engagement: the unmixed, which focuses on the characteristics of each individual entity; and the mixed, which focuses on the characteristics of the general. The first cannot abandon all afflictions, because it does not focus on all the objects that are the basis for the arising of afflictions. Therefore, one abandons them by focusing on the general characteristics of the mixed. Among these, it is not by focusing on any general characteristic that one abandons them, but by focusing on all phenomena included in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases as being without self, essence, or otherness. This is because all afflictions have ignorance as their root, which is characterized by delusion about self, and this mental engagement is extremely contradictory to that characteristic. If merely knowing selflessness could eliminate afflictions, then what is the purpose of cultivating the remaining aspects of truth, such as impermanence of conditioned things and suffering of contaminated things? Cultivating aspects such as impermanence does not eliminate afflictions, because they are not directly contradictory to the aspect of delusion about self, and therefore cannot uproot ignorance. However, it is not meaningless for a yogi to cultivate them, because they purify the aspect of selflessness. In this way, by relying on the aspect of impermanence, one obtains the aspect of suffering. By relying on the aspect of suffering, one obtains the aspect of selflessness. As it is said in the sutra: "Monks, is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable ones, it is impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering? Venerable ones, it is suffering. Whatever is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, is it appropriate to regard it as 'This is mine, this is who I am, this is my self'? Venerable ones, it is not." Why is it said that the aspect of suffering is obtained from the aspect of impermanence? Because impermanence belongs to both arising and ceasing.
