If it is said that the eight afflictions are wrongly entering the path truth, then, whatever wrong view that slanders the knowledge that there are no Arhats in the world, and whatever non-Buddhists claim to be the truth of the path of the ascetic Gautama, are non-existent. And whatever wrong views that think, "Our path and practice are for the sake of exhausting suffering, and are definitely the path of liberation," are wrongly entering the path truth. Whatever view that holds these views as supreme, etc. - the view of holding as supreme, and the discipline and asceticism that are in accordance with these views, are also wrongly entering the path truth. The remainder should be understood as being like the cessation truth. Therefore, these eight afflictions are wrongly entering the path truth, and are also to be abandoned by seeing the path. Secondly, what is to be abandoned by cultivation: In the desire realm, there are six afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation, namely, the co-emergent view of self and the view of extremes, and the four, such as attachment, that wrongly enter the object. In the form and formless realms, there are five instances of abandoning anger, so there are sixteen in total. These are abandoned by cultivating the supreme path, not just by seeing the truth, so they are to be abandoned by cultivation. These defilements to be abandoned by cultivation also follow things that are naturally tainted, and have existed for a long time. Therefore, they are difficult to separate from, so they are wrongly entering their own things, but not wrongly entering the truths. The co-emergent view of self: Even though the path of seeing has arisen, the pride of "I" still arises universally in noble hearers because of it. As it is said: "The venerable attendant, although I have not seen these aggregates of grasping as self or as belonging to self, nevertheless, the pride of 'I,' the desire for 'I,' and the latent tendencies of 'I' have not been abandoned with regard to these five aggregates of grasping. They have not been fully known, not been prevented, and not been made limitless."

O son! For example, if a mother's garment becomes soiled, it is thoroughly washed with alkali and the like. Even though it becomes free from dirt, because of attachment to it, there is still a slight smell of dust. It must be treated with fragrant incense to be removed. Similarly, even the noble Hearers who have abandoned the defilement of the view of the aggregates, which is imputed by the path of seeing, still have attachment. Because of habituation, the view of a self that conceives of things as real follows. This is to be abandoned by the path of cultivation. It should be understood that the innate view of extremes is included in the view of annihilation. Even the noble Hearers turn their minds away from nirvana because they are discouraged, thinking, "What is my self?" If the view of the aggregates and the innate view of extremes both wrongly engage with the appearance of truth, or if they do not, then if it is the former, why is it not abandoned by seeing the truth? If it is the latter, it is because they grasp at the appearance of self and what belongs to self, and grasp at permanence or annihilation. If you ask, is it not the case that all aspects of afflictions wrongly engage with the appearance of truth, since all of them have the cause of improper attention? Therefore, it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "By relying on the four truths, and on happiness, self, and what is mine, the sixteen aspects that are not true are fabricated, and then craving arises." Some are wrongly engaged due to the power of habitual tendencies that have followed since beginningless time, while others are wrongly engaged due to sudden causes such as being shown by bad friends. That which is wrongly engaged due to sudden causes is impermanent, like mistaking a rope for a snake. Therefore, it is abandoned by merely seeing the truth. That which follows due to the power of habitual tendencies has a special attachment to the continuum due to the force of habituation from beginningless time. Therefore, it is not abandoned by merely seeing the truth. However, by repeatedly habituating oneself to seeing suchness, one becomes extremely purified. Therefore, the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation are all wrongly engaged with the appearance of truth.
