Those who belong to afflictions such as anger are not characterized by making the mind extremely unpeaceful in many ways, so they are not afflictions, but because they make the mind nearly afflicted in any way, they are near afflictions. Establishing the three times there, again, the three, such as desire, are near afflictions, because when they make the mind nearly afflicted, the path of seeing will not separate from desire, and the path of meditation will not liberate it, because the obscuration that obscures them has not been abandoned. Quoting the scriptural authority of its intention is what the Blessed One said, and so on. Pervasive entanglement is the eight, such as drowsiness. Why? If you ask why they are called pervasive entanglement, it is because when applying to the virtuous side, they repeatedly and heavily entangle the mind. Among them, the virtuous side is the four, such as meditating on the cause of calm abiding. Among them, meditating on the cause of calm abiding is: when the mind is agitated or suspects agitation, then contemplating the faults of samsara, etc., is to bring to mind things that cause aversion. Meditating on the cause of superior seeing is: when the mind is inwardly drowsy, then contemplating the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, etc., is to bring to mind things that cause joy. Meditating on the cause of equanimity is: when entering the union of calm abiding and superior seeing, the mind does not manifestly cling to either the opponent or the unfavorable side, but abides in equanimity. The basis of these three is discipline, because householders have great distraction, so they cannot practice calm abiding and superior seeing. If you ask what is obscured by what? Then, for the first virtuous side, sleep and drowsiness both cause obstacles, because they cause the mind to shrink inward. The second is agitation and regret, because they cause the mind to be distracted outward. The third is jealousy and stinginess, because when associated with them, one is intolerant of the perfections of others and oneself, and repeatedly agitates the mind from the perspective of clinging. The fourth is when the discipline is completely pure,

Shamelessness and lack of embarrassment are two things that create obstacles, because if one has them, one will not hesitate to go to any place of downfall. There are four rivers established from the aspect of being in accordance with afflictions, namely: the afflictions of desire, such as the afflictions and near afflictions of desire that have abandoned views and ignorance, are the river of desire. The afflictions of the higher realms that have abandoned both are the river of existence. The views and ignorance of the three realms are, in order, the river of views and the river of ignorance. Why is it called a river? Because it carries the continuum of samsara and bad destinies in one direction. How does it carry in one direction? That is to say, those who enter into seeking desire are carried by the river of desire in one direction of the continuum, and those who enter into seeking existence are carried by the second in one direction of the continuum of samsara. Those who seek pure conduct by wrong paths are carried by the last two in the manner of the connection between the abiding of views and the abiding of ignorance, so that if they are not deluded, they will not conceive of liberation and its wrong paths. There are also four bonds established from the aspect of cutting off purification, and they are the same ones. Because it is the action of severing attachment and so on from the unfavorable side by means of the antidote, it is called a bond. The reason for becoming four bonds is that those four are also connected in the same way as before. The nature of clinging is the four, such as clinging to desire. The reason for establishing it there is that it is the root of the dispute between householders and renunciants, and also because karma increases from disputes, and therefore it is also clinging to existence, so they are called clingings. What is the cause of what dispute? Attachment and so on to the qualities of desire, such as forms and sounds, is clinging to desire, and because of that, householders argue with each other. Among them, attachment is being very happy with one's own belongings. To hold on to this completely is to be particularly attached. Because one wants not to be separated from it, it is bound. Because one is happy with the desires of others, it is completely attached. Among them, because of complete attachment, always
